The first spring show and sale for Salers Cattle Society members to be held by Harrison & Hetherington at Newark Livestock Market topped at 4000gns for the youngest bull entry to the event shown by Rigel Pedigree.
This 23 month old bull, Rigel Mallory a homozygous polled entry, secured the 2nd prize award at the pre-sale judging. He is a son of Rigel Verdun and bred from a Rigel Munro daughter, Opaline, who goes back to the herd’s noted Olivia family. Mallory sold for 4000gns and was purchased by ELW Holman & Ptrs of Aylsham, Norwich.
Selling for 2500gns was one of two entries from Messrs Gowthorpe of York. This home bred 2 year old bull, Approach Farm Max, is sired by Manor Lane Firework and is out of a Seawell Franko bred cow. Max was sold to AW Clarke of Skehness, Lincs.
Two heifers both sold for 1800gns each and both consigned by Rigel Pedigree. The first to sell was Rigel Black Pearl who also won 1st prize in her class and lifted the reserve overall championship ticket. She is by Rigel Mycroft and out of Rigel Pria a daughter of the imported sire Amazonien.
Following Pearl into the sale ring was her stable mate, Rigel Martha another polled heifer. She is a daughter to Rigel Verdun and bred from the great cow family who goes back to Rigel Cordelia, a successful show winner for the herd. Both heifers were purchased for 1800gns by Messrs Cuzens of Dorchester.
