Reduction Sale from the Orton Grange Holstein Herd

13th November 2019

HONEYBEE TOPS ORTON GRANGE SALE

The Orton Grange sale was an outstanding success from start to finish with buyers having an outstanding choice of modern high-quality cows and heifers many with special pedigrees that had earning potential way beyond their ability to produce milk.  Trade topped at 3,200gns with the overall average coming to £1829 with no less than 36 animals selling for or more than £2000.

The sale was preceded by the November Border & Lakeland Club sale and some of the Orton Grange animals took part in the pre-sale show.  Winning overall Champion was Ortongrange Bankroll Lila Z who won the Cow in milk class under the assessment of judge Ted Fearon from the Waltonhall herd.  She was sired by top type sire Crasdale Bankroll and was bred from the million-dollar cow Lylehaven Lila Z EX94.  She had recently calved in her second having classified very Good 86 as a two-year-old. She was the first lot to enter the sale ring and sold for 3,000gns to Robbie Scott from the Nethervalley herd in Ayrshire.

Since the last Orton Grange reduction sale in 2008, Richard Martin has built up a strong reputation for always selling his very best.  One of the special cows he sold was Ortongrange Snowman Alysia who sold in the Passion for Pedigree sale for 10,000gns and has went on to win Super Heifer at Agriscot and All Britain Heifer in Milk in 2014 and was Grand Champion at Ireland’s most prestige show, Balmoral in 2017.  Placing second in the cow in milk class was her granddaughter Starlet Beemer Alexis who had recently classified Very Good 87 and sold for 3,000gns to Janice & James Taylor from the High Whinnow herd near Wigton.

Topping this fine group of milking cattle was Ortongrange Honeybee R Missy from the Wesswood Rudy Missy cow family probably one of the hottest bull breeding lines in the Holstein breed with sires such as Mogul, Supersire, Silver, Mardi Gras, Oak and Monterey to name a few.  Honeybee had recently calved with her second and had classified Good Plus 84 as a two year old and looked a shoe in for a Very Good in the near future. She sold for 3,200gns to Matthew Breen in N. Ireland with her two baby calves sired by Modesty Marquee selling for 1,100gns to the Forster family from Weary Hall Style.  Another four daughters born in October sired by Frazzled sold topping at 2,100gns going to the Hodge family from West Scoutts Farm in Ayrshire.

Her full sister Ortongrange Honeybee Rudy Miss sold for 2,700gns to John & Brian O’Connor in Co. Cork in the Rep. of Ireland.  She was coming to the end of her first lactation and was due in January to welcome Brennan (sexed).  Her November born Headway Alltime daughter sold for 1,700gns to the same owner.  Another four heifer calves from this powerful cow sired by Modesty Marquee sold to average almost £1100.

There was an outstanding group of in-calf heifers with a large percentage in calf to valuable female sexed sires, however they sold below their true value averaging £1362 with the top price in-calf heifer going to Ortongrange Dewars Rose.  This stylish silky hided heifer was sired by Dewars and bred from the Blackrose cow family.  Her fourth dam was the World Dairy Expo Champion Lavender Ruby Red Rose.  Rose was due to De-Su Hartley sexed and was purchased by T. Hack from Dyfed in Wales.

Richard Martin would like to thank everyone who supported his sale and wishes everyone much success with the Orton Grange animals.
