Simmental Spring Show & Sale

27th April 2012

Simmental Show & Sales at Borderway, Carlisle on 27th April 2012

The National Spring Show and Sale of Simmental Bulls and Females held at Borderway Mart, Carlisle met a tremendous interest with buyers arriving from Aberdeenshire to Somerset and many going home empty handed.

Lead auctioneer Scott Donaldson praised the quality of animals forward, saying “the calibre of the show was truly first-class, with some magnificent entries presented and this has reflected in the sale average, which has climbed nearly £1000 for the bulls and over £750 for the females from last year’s figures. The clearance rate has been virtually 100%, and I think that demonstrates how much interest this sale has increased by”.

Securing the top price of the day, and establishing a new centre record at 7,900gns, was Braegarrie Bravo 10, from Lindsay Currie, Girvan. This stylish offering, sired by Woodhall Premier, had earlier been awarded the Male Championship and Reserve Overall Championship at the pre-sale show. Bravo is bred from a homebred daughter of Gretna House Supersonic and sold carrying an SRI of +56. He was purchased by A & E Paton & Son, Girvan, Ayrshire.

Following at 5,500gns was Alan Tallentire’s 18 month old Popes Laird son, Swingletree Buster 10. Buster’s mother, Swingletree Liberty, was sired by Brooklyn Jonti and he sold carrying an SRI of +83. He was kcked down to Borders enthusiast Keith Preston of Galashiels.

Also among the day’s leading prices was ather bull from the Braegarrie Herd, this time a two-year old entry from Lindsay Currie. Braegarrie Barclay 10, a Corskie Regal son and bred from a Whitemire King Kong daughter, who has produced many high priced sons. Barclay sold for 5,200gns to Mr James Burns, Renfrewshire.

At the same money was Simply Courageous 11 from Rob Fitton based near Bolton. Courageous is one of only two Seaview Tommy sons on the UK mainland; he was snapped up by Mr TJ Neill, Northumberland.

Quality was again in demand when the females entered the sale ring.  Leading the prices was the pre-sale Overall Champion, Midhope Highlight 3rd from W J Hollingsworth, Sheffield. This two year old in-calf heifer sired by Dirnanean Swie and carrying a calf to Corksie Wealth, commanded 3,800gns when selling to Messrs MJ & KM Boucher, Axbridge, Somerset.

Heading to the same home for 3,500gns was Midhope Saffron 4th; a maiden heifer again from W J Hollingsworth. Completing a hat-trick of leading prices for Mr Hollingsworth was the Reserve Female Champion, Midhope Saffron 4th , who sold for 2,900gns to Northumberland based breeders Messrs J & JJ Sanders.

Averages – 16 Bulls, £4183.00 (+ £995.50) 15 Females, £1956.00 (+ £759.00)
