Solway & Tyne Texel Club (1st) Show & Sale

There was a good trade for the show of sheep forward at the annual Solway and Tyne Texel

Breeders Club sale at Carlisle on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd September and averages were up over £400 for ram lambs on the year and averages in all other sections took a leap, showing the breed to be well sought after by pedigree and commercial buyers alike.  A ram lamb from A & G Howie, West Kck, Peterhead, Aberdeen, topped the sale when Kck Yankee was kcked down at 30,000gns to a consortium of buyers, including Peter & Rose Woof, Stainton, Claybury Texels, Shrewsbury, Richard Wilson, Eden Valley, Robert Bennet, Plasucha, Edward Pugh, Glanllyn, David McKerrow, Nochnary and R E J Pierce, Oldford. A February born triplet, Yankee is by Kck’s successful stock ram Tophill Wall St and out of a Cambwell Trademark ewe who was purchased from the Cambwell Flock for 4500gns.

As expected the pen from Strathbogie had a good run later in the sale and Jim Innes’ last lamb in the ring, sold for 15,000gns to R J Teward & Son, Staindrop, Darlington. Strathbogie Yogi, is by Millar’s Windbrook and out of a Glenside Razzle Dazzle ewe. He followed the third prize lamb from the show the previous evening, by the same sire and this time out of a Scholars Twenty Twelve ewe, selling to John Forsyth Glenside for 5,000gns. Robbie Wilson, Milnbank, Huntly, had judged the show the previous evening and despite being the first lot in the ring, his Milnbank Yellowstone lamb by Glenside Willy Nilly sold for 14,000gns to Ibrahim Jaeban, Forth House, Cockermouth. Yellowstone’s dam is by Strathbogie Untouchable and her ET sister sold in 2015 for 7,000gns. The second 14,000gns bid came from Matt and Craig Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton, when they bought Tima Yogi Bear, from David Gray, Sunnycroft, Selkirk. Yogi Bear is a Shannah Won-O-Won lamb, with an index of 327 and had previously taken 4th prize at the Highland Show and Champion at Northumberland. David Gray later bought back some of his own breeding when he purchased Clinterty Yankee Doodle from Brian Buchan, Clinterty, Aberdour for 4,500gns. Yankee Doodle is by Tophill Wall St and out of a dam by Ettrick Smasher.

Robbie Wilson’s Champion from the previous evening, from Brain MacTaggart, Douganhill Farms, Castle Doulglas, was eagerly awaited in the ring and did t disappoint when he sold for 12,000gns to Paul O’Conner, Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. Douganhill Young Gun is by Sportsmans Tremendous II and out of a Hull House Special Brew ewe. Ather from the pen, Douganhill Young Blood, also by Tremendous, sold in a three way split to Matthew MacTaggart, Rascarrel, Ian Barbour, Beechgrove, Annan and D P Delves, Churchstoke, Shrops for 5,000gns.

Charlie and Steph Bowden had to wait to the end of the sale to take 7,000gns for their Kck Will I Am sired lamb, Sportsmans Yankee Doodle, when he was kcked down to Peter Woof, Stainton, Richard Wilson, Eden Valley, D Nesbitt, Seascale and R E J Pierce, Oldford. The second last lot in the ring saw Sportsmans Young Yin sell to Archie Hamilton, Smyllum, Lanark, for 4,000gns. This lamb is again by Will I Am and he is out of a Milnbank Special One ewe.

A bid of 6,000gns saw the first of a very good pen from Robert Osborne’s, Durisdeer Flock, Thornhill, Dumfries, go to T Nesbitt & Sons, Alwent Hall, Darlington, Durisdeer Yankee is by Llangwm Wario and out of a Bradleys Taurus ewe. His next in the ring by the same sire sold for 5,200gns and went to J Buchan Torrax, Kirriemuir. Durisdeer Youngster is out of a Hexel Toy Boy ewe. William McCaffrey from Malpas, Cheshire, sold Scholars You Kw, by Eden Valley Wiz Kid for 5,000gns to John Mackie, Milton of Noth. This lamb is and out of a Sportsmans Trojan II ewe. A bid of 4,000gns from John Peterkin, Beauly, Invernesshire, secured Kck Yogi from A & G Howie, Kck Peterhead. Ather by the Tophill Wall St ram, he is out of a very productive dam by Garngour Nobleman and had an index of 351.

In the shearling ring, bidding was brisk for a good show of commercial rams. The Strathbogie flock, showing shearlings for the first time at the sale, again featured strongly in the top prices. Their 1st prize ram and Reserve Male Champion from the previous evening, sold jointly for 7,800gns to Robert Cockburn, Knapp Flock, Errol, Perthshire and Messrs Wood and Hunter Dalchirla, Crieff. He is again out of a ewe by the successful Glenside Razzle Dazzle and by Aman Vyrnwy. He was followed into the ring by Strathbogie Willie who sold for 5,800gns to RC Ellis, Eglur Flock, Llaneurgain, Flinshire and William McCaffrey, Scholars Flock, Cheshire. The usual good consignment from Douganhill led off with a bid of 5,200gns from Paul Quick, Loosebeare, Devon, for Douganhill Whisky Mac by Douganhill Urastar and out of a Claybury Powerpack mother. Robin and Caroline Orr’s, Halbeath flock from Dunfermline took the next two top prices, when a Halbeath VIP son out of a Teiglum Topper ewe sold to George and Harry Wilkinson, Arkle, Wigton for 4,000gns and their second prize shearling from the show earlier, made 3,600gns to a Northern Ireland consortium, including Paul O’conr, Downpatrick, Alistair Gault, Forkins, R. Henderson, Ballynahone, Sam McCauley, Ballymoney and R Strawbridge, Coleraine.

The Females the previous evening were a good trade seeing most sold, with the leader coming from the reduction of the Allanfauld Flock from John MacGregor, Kilsyth, Glasgow. A Goldies Velocity daughter out of a ewe by Strathbogie Stifler, this gimmer had an index of 351. She sold to Boden and Davies Ltd, Sportsman Flock for 5,000gns. Robert Cockburn sold his Knapp Gimmer by Tamnamoney Tuborg Gold to Mr Herdman, Dromore, Northern Ireland for 4,800gns. She is out of a Kck show ewe by Baltier Rascal. There were two bids for 4,000gns. The first went to the 2nd prize winner from Richard Wilson, Eden Valley Flock when she sold to Page Farm Partnership, Rookwith, Ripon and the top price lamb of the night from Leigh Smith’s Majestic Flock, Hensingham, Cumbria, also sold for 4,000gns, when Messrs Bowden and Davies added her to their previous purchase. She is by Glenside Valhalla and had been Champion at Skelton and Penrith shows.
