CROWDS FLOCK TO STERNDALE AND PEAK ELITE SALE

One of the largest crowds ever seen at a sale travelled to Fernydale Farm, Earl Sterndale, Nr. Buxton in Derbyshire for a sale of the elite members of the Sterndale and Peak Herds of Holsteins, the property of Bill Nadin and Yasmin Bradbury. An estimated crowd approaching 1000 keen and enthusiastic Holstein breeders came from all over the UK, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland for this very special sale which was being held in conjunction with an open day to celebrate the two herds winning Holstein UK’s Premier Herd for 2013.
This was undoubtedly one of the best catalogues ever published in the UK for a sale of Holstein genetics and the animals themselves fully lived up to their billing and their illustrious pedigrees. Many people have travelled worldwide attending the top sales all over the globe and the consensus of opinion was that the quality on offer was phemenal.
The top seller was the 11 month old heifer Sterndale Explode Ashlyn, a daughter of Wabash Way Explode with 4 Excellent dams behind her from this great family with the famous Triday Ashlyn (EX96-2E) being her third dam. Signing the cheque for 10000gns was Peter Prior of Designer Holsteins of Essex.

She was followed in the ring by her six year old dam, the 12800kg. Sterndale Gold Ashlyn (Ex91), sired by the great Goldwyn of course. She was carrying her 4th calf to Bombero and is due in January and was sold for 6900gns to Nick Sercombe of Knaptoft, Leicestershire. The next animal in the ring was Gold Ashlyn’s sister, Alexander Ashlyn (VG87-2yr), a beautiful milking heifer due with her second next January to El Bombero. Purchasing her for 7200gns for Scotland was Robert Veitch of the Ve-Tech Herd at Tarbolton, Ayrshire. The five female members of the Ashlyn family averaged £6636!
Ather Goldwyn daughter, the seven year old Sterndale Goldwyn Ghost (EX92), a 7th generation straight Excellent really shone and caught the eye; this powerful black cow with big production – over 13000kg – and 5% fat and 3.4% protein was carrying her fifth calf to Mardi Gras and is due in November. She sold for the day’s second highest price of 9000 gns to Ben and Nia Llewellin of the Clarby herd, Pembrokeshire who also purchased her yearling daughter by Sully Hart Meridian for 3800 gns; Ather member of the Ghost family, the October ’13 calf Sterndale Dorcy S Ghost, with nine straight Excellents behind her, and a granddaughter of the 9000gns Goldwyn Ghost for 6200gns sold to MN Davies of Clunderwen, Pembrokeshire
The first milking Swman to be sold in the UK was Sterndale Swy Rae, a heifer who freshened in April and bred from 10 generations of EX/VG dams made the next top price of 7300gns. She was sold giving 35 kg daily and was one of three cattle purchased by Andrew McAulay of Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
The stunning October ’13 calf Sterndale Colts Jodie Red, who was red and polled faced an avalanche of bidding when she entered the ring. A daughter of Sandy-Valley Colt P Red and out of the 10 generation VG/EX Sterndale Sterling Jodie Red (VG87-2yr) who was Grand Champion Red & White UK Dairy Expo last year, she was secured on the final bid of 6500gns by D Buchanan of Newry, Co. Down buying for his Happy Holsteins herd. Mr Buchanan also purchased the six month old calf Sterndale Explode Ghost, who already has 7 VG/EX sisters and is out of the Ex93-2E Sterndale Allen Ghost.
A great brood cow, Sterndale Shottle Papoose (Ex94-2E) attracted much attention; she has given three yields in excess of 13000kg and is carrying her 5th calf due in November to Ladys-Mar Olympian. She sold for 5500gns to Donal Neville of Croagh, Co Limerick in the Republic of Ireland. Ather great cow, Sterndale Ruby Red (Ex93-2E) freshened in March with her fourth and a seventh generation straight Excellent member of the Blackrose family sold to Rob Kirk for his Leicestershire based Leedham Herd.
The yearling heifer Sterndale Shadow Anna, by B-Crest Shadow, has ermous potential as a show calf realised 5000 gns to Belle Genetics of Penrith, Cumbria and her dam the nine year old Hyclass Roy Anna (Ex94-3E) sold for 4000gns to Ian McLean for his Priestland Herd at Bushmills, Co. Antrim.
There was a total clearance of bulls and they sold well selling up to 4000 gns for Sterndale Galahad, a Braxton son out of the Sterndale CB Allen Ghost (Ex94-2E) who was purchased by John Minshull of Tean. There was also a great sale for the embryos with the top lot being a package of 4 by a mutually agreeable sire out of this year’s UK Dairy Expo Champion Peak Goldwyn Rhapsody (Ex95-2E) which made 900gns each.
