A Fine Fellow of an Auctioneer

Harrison & Hetherington (H&H) is very proud to announce that Joe Bowman, Auctioneer, has graduated from Harper Adams University with a Degree in Livestock Market Operations and Management. This distinguished achievement also secures his enrolment as a Fellow of The Livestock Auctioneer’s Association.

Joe, who joined H&H in 2015 at the age of 21, has been an integral member of the team ever since, working primarily at Borderway and supporting Kirkby Stephen Mart as well as Lazonby, and Middleton-in-Teesdale. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic extending the course duration, Joe successfully completed this rigorous program which typically spans four years.

Since his very first auction, where he sold three chickens, Joe has taken on significant responsibilities for H&H, including managing all breeding sheep and store sales at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, and overseeing sales in Kirkby Stepehen, Lazonby, and Middleton-in-Teesdale.

“The Livestock Market Operations and Management degree from Harper Adams University is designed to equip individuals with the skills necessary for successful careers in livestock auctioneering and management. Commenting Joe Bowman said:

“Alongside my day to day work, I have been long time studying and preparing for this goal, so I am delighted to have successfully completed the degree and to become a Fellow of The Livestock Auctioneer’s Association. The course covers an in-depth curriculum ranging across Animal Welfare & Health, Law & Tax for Livestock Auctioneers, Market Operational Management, Valuation, and Supply Chain Relationships and I would say it is a must for any budding auctioneer.”

Joe Bowman, originally from Brampton Fell Farm in Cumbria, has been involved in farming from a young age. Raised on the family’s 500-acre mixed farm, Joe’s early experiences included managing Swaledale ewes and Limousin Cross Cows. His auctioneering career began in 2015 as a yard drover at H&H, and since then he has progressed rapidly and successfully through the company’s and Harper Adams’s auctioneer training programs.

Scott Donaldson, Managing Director of Harrison & Hetherington, praised Joe’s dedication and hard work. “Joe Bowman’s commitment and perseverance have been exceptional. His achievement reflects not only his personal dedication but also the high standards of our auctioneering team. This qualification will significantly benefit our company and enhance our service to clients.”

The course, sponsored by the Livestock Auctioneers Association and running since 2011, has a challenging yet rewarding structure. It attracts a growing number of aspiring auctioneers each year, and Joe’s accomplishment highlights the importance of continuous professional development in the livestock auction industry.
