Harrison & Hetherington (H&H) is expanding its machinery services across the Scottish Borders and North Northumberland with the creation of a dedicated Farm Machinery Division based at its St Boswells Auction Mart.
The move reflects growing demand from farmers, contractors and rural businesses for specialist machinery auction services across the region.
It also builds on the success of H&H's established online machinery sales platform and its reputation for conducting on-farm dispersal sales, with the company continuing to invest in services that meet the changing needs of the agricultural sector. This includes H&H’s hybrid sales, which combine traditional on-farm or on-site auctions with live internet bidding, enabling buyers to compete in person or remotely in real time.
The division will be headed by experienced auctioneer Iain Dick, who will work alongside Harrison & Hetherington Regional Sales Manager & Auctioneer David Holliday to further develop the business and provide a comprehensive machinery auction service throughout the Borders.
As part of the expanded offering, H&H will conduct on-farm dispersal sales, collective machinery auctions and online timed sales, alongside its hybrid auction service. This gives vendors greater flexibility in how machinery, implements and equipment are marketed, while opening sales to the widest possible pool of potential buyers.
The next H&H Borders on-farm dispersal sale will take place on Friday, 25th September, on behalf of Messrs Malcolm Bruce, Bemersyde Farm, Melrose. This will be followed by a collective sale of Farm Vehicles, Machinery, Implements and Small Tools at St Boswells Mart on Friday, 13th November, with further sales planned in the coming months.
Iain Dick said: “Our aim is to provide vendors with the most effective route to market while giving buyers access to a wider choice of quality machinery. Whether through an on-farm dispersal sale, a collective auction or an online timed sale, we can tailor the service to suit our customers' needs.
“Our hybrid approach is also a real strength. By combining an on-farm or on-site sale with live internet bidding, we retain the atmosphere and competitive nature of a traditional live auction while allowing buyers who cannot be there on the day to take part in real time. For vendors, that can significantly extend the reach of a sale and bring more potential purchasers into the bidding.
“Our online timed auctions have also proved particularly successful, allowing vendors to market larger and higher-value machinery without the cost and inconvenience of transporting equipment to the mart. Detailed photography and video enable buyers to bid from anywhere, creating a much wider marketplace and delivering strong results for our clients.”
The new division reinforces H&H's long-established machinery auction business, offering customers a dedicated service from St Boswells while continuing to connect vendors with an expanding network of buyers across the UK and overseas.
David Holliday said: “The market for quality used machinery continues to perform exceptionally well as farmers look to maximise value from every investment. Reliable, well-maintained machinery is in strong demand, and buyers are increasingly prepared to travel – or bid online – to secure the right equipment.
“Creating a dedicated machinery division at St Boswells strengthens our presence in the Borders and enables us to provide an even more responsive service to customers throughout the region. Backed by our experienced team, established online platform and live internet bidding facilities, we're well placed to support both vendors and purchasers in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”
H&H is one of the UK's leading machinery auctioneers, selling everything from high-value tractors and combines to implements and workshop equipment through on-farm, mart, hybrid and online auctions. By combining traditional auctioneering with live internet bidding and online timed sales, H&H can bring machinery to buyers across the UK and further afield, providing vendors with greater exposure and helping them achieve competitive values.
