With the expected seasonal peaks and troughs, we can report that numbers for both sheep and cattle have been good throughout the year, trade has been level and consistent, and in the main slightly ahead of last year.

The year set off with cattle values continuing to climb. Store and Prime cattle were in big demand as stronger cattle regularly breached the £2000 mark, and values well above the £3/Kg mark became the new norm for quality butchers’ cattle.

The consistent high quality of lambs, suckler calves and store cattle we have been able to offer is a testament to our local breeders, attracting buyers from far and wide, and achieving premium prices.

Here two of their current young auctioneers give their views on 2023 and goals for 2024 Joe Bowman grew up on a farm just outside Castle Carrock and now lives at Heads Nook with his wife Steph. Now 29, he Joined H&H in 2015, aged 21, and is currently the Store Lamb and Breeding Auctioneer based at Borderway.

A New Chapter for Broughton-in-Furness Auction Centre

After almost nineteen years of dedicated service, Harrison & Hetherington bids farewell to the Broughton-in-Furness Auction Centre, marking the end of an era. The company had hoped to conduct what would be its last sale at the centre on Monday 4th December, the Annual Christmas Show, however the sudden arrival of wintery conditions caused the sale to be postponed until Monday 11th December, all being well.

Harrison & Hetherington are very proud to have been invited to conduct the sale of the renowned Gretnahouse Charolais and Aberdeen Angus herds at Borderway, Carlisle, on Saturday 18th November Breeders are expected to convene at Borderway from all over the UK and Ireland to support the sale of some of the most influential and admired genetics in this country today. This is for the dispersal sale of the remarkable Gretnahouse herds, a landmark event for both the Charolais and Aberdeen Angus breeds.
