Kirkby Stephen Breeding Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd Kirkby Stephen held their annual Early Breeding Prize Show & Sale of Continental, Mule Ewes, Shearlings and Gimmer lambs when a catalogued entry of 1,277 sheep were on offer.

Topping the female section at £320 were the first placed pen of 5 Texel cross shearlings consigned by Messrs Pedley, Yore House, Sedbergh which went on to sell to our judge for the day Mr P Dent, Elm House, Bolton.
Mr Dent had a wonderful show of sheep put in front of him to judge, been one of the best seen at this sale so far.

The presale show was very kindly sponsored by Clarke Agriculture, J Noel Paul & Co Accountants & I’ansons Bros.

Breeding Rams sold to £1200 on two separate occasions firstly for the first prize Beltex shearling from Messrs McCune, Farewell Grange, Wigton selling to Messrs Brown, Lummas House, Richmond.

Next selling at £1200 was the first prize cross bred and overall Reserve Champion a Beltex cross Texel shearling from Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm and selling to our judge Messrs Allinson, West Briscoe, Barnard Castle.

Messrs Allinson awarded the overall champion to a pure Texel shearling from Messrs Bainbridge, Laneside, Barnard Castle which sold for £1000 to Messrs Allinson.

Messrs Winter, Clickham Farm, Appleby sold Texel shearlings to top at £280, and other pens making £270 on two further occasions.
Messrs Wilson, Bankdale sold a pen of 5 Texel cross shearlings to make £275 with another pen of 12 Texel cross shearlings from this home selling for £260. The consignment of 50 Texel cross shearlings from this home sold to average a whopping £245.23.
Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold Texel cross shearlings to make £270.
Messrs Chester, Grassgill Lodge, Soulby sold 2 shear Texel cross ewes to make £295 with another pen of 7 2 shears selling for £285, and a pen of 7 Texel shearlings making £270 also from this home.

Trade was fantastic throughout with good quality continental and strong sheep being in particular demand.

Suffolk shearlings sold to £205 for a pen from Messrs Winter, Clickham Farm.
Texel cross mule shearlings sold to £190 for a pen of 12 from S Longrigg, Breaks Hall.
Pure hill cheviot shearlings sold to top at £192 for a pen of 5 from Messrs Buckle, Buckles Farm, Barras.

Gimmer lambs topped at £178 for the first prize pen of 5 Texel cross lambs from Messrs Tiplady, Red House, Barnard Castle.
