On Monday 30th August Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of primestock. A smaller show of 275 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were on offer on Bank Holiday Monday.  

PRIME BULLS: A very good entry of 91 prime bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale whereby quality was down on the week and trade would see a slight easing also. Top overall was a superb Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Wishaw attaining £1902.38 and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Next best was from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith and purchased and by A & D Meats, Rossendale. British Blue crosses sold to £1766.66 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan bought by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Charolais sold to £1734.35 from Messrs Wilson, Carskerdo Farm, Fife. Top overall pence per kilo of 247.5p was paid to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk for their Limousin cross. Dairy bred bulls sold to £1306.70 from Messrs Murray & Son, Conheath, Dumfries purchased by Bowland Foods and a top pence per kilo of 193.5p for a Friesian from Messrs Reed, Croft House, Carlisle.

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller show of only 22 prime steers and heifers forward with a fantastic trade achieved for the quality of stock presented. Top overall was Messrs Blake, Halfway Well with their Limousin cross heifer peaking at £1816.04 purchased by R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. Others from the same home sold to £1769.24 and Messrs Rae, Boghead, Dumfries sold to £1768.18 for another both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle who also purchased the top pence per kilo animal from Messrs Mair, Meikleholm, Lockerbie for 287.5ppk.

Steers attained a day’s top of £1797.95 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Wilson, Carskerdo Farm, Fife and was purchased by Eric Hall. British Blue crosses from Messrs Murray, Conheath, Dumfries sold to £1748.21 purchased again by Eric Hall. Limousin’s peaked at £1736.73 from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Carlisle. The steer was also top price per kilo of 273.5p and was bought by Kings Butchers.

CAST COWS: A small show of 175 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to an increased ringside of buyers. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm sold the top price Limousin cow for 1057kg at 164.5p totalling £1738 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg Farm sold the top priced Simmental cow for 776kg at 216.5p totalling £1680 bought by Jewitt Meats. Messrs Reid, Calfpark sold a Limousin x cow for 887kg at 173.5p totalling £1538 to Les Fell. Messrs Irving, New Sandsfield sold the top priced Blue x cow for 822kg at 184.5p totalling £1516 to Michael Helliwell and a Limousin x at 664kg at 213.5p totalling £1417 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm sold the top price Aberdeen Angus cow for 976kg at 154.5p totalling £1507 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Fishwick & Son, Thornship Farm sold a Blue x cow for 742kg at 196.5p totalling £1458 and 805kg at 177.5p totalling £1388 for a Limousin x bought by Michael Helliwell and Messrs Roberts. Messrs Mattinson & Son, Burthwaite sold a Limousin x heifer for 515kg at 227.5p totalling £1171 to Owain Llyr.

Once again, a plain show of dairy cast cows was on offer. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold a Montbeliarde x cow for 900kg at 138.5p totalling £1246 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Robinson & Son, Gelt Hall Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 713kg at 167.5p totalling £1194 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 820kg at 145.5p totalling £1103 also to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 889kg at 132.5p totalling £1177 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 801kg at 137.5p totalling £1101 to Les Fell. Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House Farm sold a Holstein x Heifer for 600kg at 172.5p totalling £1035 to Alan Jarvis.

CAST BULLS: 7 stock bulls on offer. Messrs Edgar Fellside Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 947kg at 158.5p totalling £1501 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Norwood, Fell End sold a Beef Shorthorn bull for 983kg at 152.5p totalling £1499 also to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 30th August 2021 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep despite the bank holiday numbers remained strong seeing an entry of 2448 head forward.

The overall quality of the lambs forward would be down on the week with a shortage of best end types being keenly bid for and well sought after.  An overall average of 244ppk or £106.73 per head was achieved; 40 lots sold over £130 with 43 lots over 280ppk. The sale topped at £142 for a fantastic lamb sold by Joanne Halliday, Broathill, Kirkpatrick Fleming which sold to Mr R Skelton. Top per kilo was 330.5p for a pen of 9 Dutch lambs from Messrs Storey, Woodhead, Haltwhistle to Mr A Dawson, followed at 330p from Ann Little, The Hollands selling to Mr M Halliwell.

CAST SHEEP: At the weekly sale of 200 cast sheep trade continued to hold very well.  Meaty ewes sell with ease.  Topping today’s sale at £142 was a cracking Texel tup from Messrs Dixon & Chapelhow with ewes selling to £132 from Thrimby Farms.  Leaner types of ewes would be slightly easier with Swaledales selling to a top of £72 from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House
