On Monday 6th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of primestock. A larger show of 451 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were on offer alongside side 2685 prime and cast sheep.
PRIME BULLS: A similar entry of 84 prime bulls forward selling to a fantastic trade throughout the sale for all classes of quality. Attaining a top price of £1836.54 was a British Blue from Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale, Gretna purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford; Parthenais from Messrs Bradley, Marina House, Maryport sold to £1787.30 purchased by Bowland Foods and Limousin crosses from Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria purchased again by Ralph Pearsons. Top overall pence per kilo of 256.5p was for the aforementioned from Messrs Livingstone.
Dairy bred bulls very easily sold to a top of £1488.21 for a Friesian from Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Holsteins to £1203.19 from Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale, Gretna purchased by Bowland Foods; top pence per kilo of 201.5p was paid to Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger show of 43 prime steers and heifers forward maintaining a fantastic trade throughout the sale. Top overall was an outstanding Charolais heifer for Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill Carlisle who achieved £2007.23 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Limousins sold to £1933.58 from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased again by Pioneers Foods. Others to £1911.98 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths sold to £1743.41 and Simmental crosses from the same home sold to £1642.59. Top overall pence per kilo of 287.5p was paid to Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie to 281.5p and purchased by Kings Butchers.
Steers saw a day’s top of £1969.38 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie and £1966.13 for another from the same home. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton’s best was £1964.63 all purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses to a top of £1922.03 from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and Charolais to £1801.90 for Messrs Harrison, Aldermanseat, Gretna and purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham. Top price per kilo steer came from Messrs Dent with a Limousin cross achieving 267.5p. Many more are required on a weekly basis.

CAST COWS: A large show of 329 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to the massive ringside of buyers with 94 beef cows selling to 167.7p, up 16.4p on the week and 17 selling for 200ppk plus.
Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side run of 7 outstanding cows sold to average 796.86kg, 201.2p, £1674.96 and topped at 774kg, 238.5p, £1845 for a Limousin cross and 813kg, 222.5p, £1808 for a British Blue both purchased by Owain Llyr; also a British Blue cross sold for 673kg, 234.5p, £1578 again to Owain Llyr. Messrs Wallace, Gapshields sold a Limousin cross cow for 817kg, 219.5p, £1793 to Charles Kirkpatrick. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House run of well finished cows topped at 745kg, 219.5p, £1635 for a Blonde cross and 709kg, 229.5p, £1627 for a British Blue cross both purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Bradley & Son, Marina House sold the top priced Parthenais cow for 651kg, 236.5p, £1539 also to Owain Llyr; Mr Chall Parsons, Slealands run of cows topped at 643kg, 233.5p, £1501 for a British Blue cow bought by Jewitt Meats; Messrs Oliver, Walton Woodhead sold two cows for 656kg, 220.5p, £1446 and 612kg, 222.5p, £1361 for a Limousin cross and British Blue cross both bought by Jewitt Meats.
Once again a plain show of dairy cast cows was on offer, however trade for all classes would be up on the week, Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 824kg, 151.5p, £1248 to Sean McGimpsey; Messrs McKie, Wedholme Hill sold Holstein cross heifers for 745kg, 165.5p, £1232 and 700kg, 159.5p, £1116 bought by Capper Farming and Les Fell. Seymour Farms sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 769kg, 158.5p, £1218 to Les Fell; Messrs Mandale & Son, Lambfield sold the top priced Danish Red cow for 832kg, 137.5p, £1144 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Mitchell & Son, Mirkbooths run of cows topped at 766kg, 146.5p, £1122 and 750kg, 147.5p, £1106 for Holstein crosses bought by Les Fell and Phillip Bowes; Messrs Messenger, The Howes sold the top priced Norwegian Red cow for 609kg, 182.5p, £1111 to Les Fell. Messrs Hyslop, Meinside sold Holstein cross heifers for 198.5p and 189.5p bought by Brian Capper and David Holmes; Buckabank Farms also sold Holstein cross heifers to 181.5p to Les Fell who also bought Messrs Paul & Son, Greigslands Holstein cross heifer which sold for 180.5p

CAST BULLS: 11 stock bulls were on offer; Messrs Goldie, Greenfield sold the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1160kg, 147.5p, £1711 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ackerley, Henrys Hill sold a Limousin stock bull for 963kg, 147.5p, £1420 also to Owain Llyr and Maxwell Farming Co. sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus bull for 928kg, 142.5p, £1322 to Jewitt Meats.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday 6th September 2021 Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of prime sheep where another large entry of 2678 a prime sheep were forward at Borderway, an overall average of 242.5p, SQQ 247.5p was recorded, this being very similar on the week , well fleshed and export weight lambs of all grades were met with a good enquiry, 45-48kgs straighter bred lambs lacking finish found a more limited market, nonetheless the average sees Borderway again 15-20p above same day operators. The sale topped at a remarkable £180 for an outstanding 44kg Beltex x Texel lamb from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan who also lead the pence per kilo at 409ppk; 40kg Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburne, Hexham sold to £160 or 400ppk with dozens breaking 300p and £130 a head. More numbers required next week as more buyers at ringside are anticipated.
