On Monday 13th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller show of 74 Prime bulls forward with a fantastic trade throughout for all classes.  A shortage of top quality bulls evident but vendors who produced the goods were more than rewarded.  Top overall was a British Blue at £2016.53 was paid to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston,  Charolais to £1920.73 from Messrs Cleasby, Linden House, Penrith again bought by Bowland Foods and Limousins to £1883.30 from Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle purchased by Morgan Helliwell and £1867.32 for Upper Brydekirk, Annan purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  Top overall pence per kilo of 263.50 was received by Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton and purchased again by Ralph Pearson.  Dairy bulls to £1367.81 for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Moscrop and Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle purchased by Wrights of Boston,  Montbeliardes to £1330 from Seymour Farms, Wigton and Friesians to £1165.37 from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith.  Top price per kilo of 218.00 for a Fleckvieh from Moscrop & Waugh.  Many more are required weekly.

PRIME CATTLE: A small entry of only 40 prime steers and heifers forward at the Borderway weekly sale where numbers remain short of buyer’s requirements for all classes.  Top overall for the second week running was Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill Farm, Carlisle receiving £1940.63 and purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Others to £1895.40 for another Limousin cross for Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, £1788 for Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths and £1778 twice by Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle and Steven Wilson, Butchers.  Top price per kilo heifer and overall top of 292.5p was achieved by Messrs Blake, Halfway Well with another Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Ten heifers sold to 270ppk or above.

Steers peaked at £1896.60 from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton and was purchased by Eric Hall.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold their top to £1872.50 and was purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill sold top Simmental cross to £1860.95 again purchased by Eric Hall.  Blonde crosses to £1833.75 for Bothel Parks, Wigton and British Blues to £1797.60 for Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie.  Messrs Bell also sold joint top price per kilo of 267.5 along with Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks.   Many more required weekly for more information contact Grant Anderson 07872 129274

CAST COWS: A larger show of 430 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to a good ring side of buyers which insured a great trade again. Once again Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm’s run of outstanding cows topped at 853kg at 225.5p totalling £1923 for a Blonde and Limousin cows sold for 820kg at 209.5p totalling £1717, 800kg at 204.5p totalling £1636 and 775kg at 208.5p totalling £1615 and a Blue x cow sold for 657kg at 225.5p totalling £1481 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick (x3), Owain Llyr and Norman Bowe. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton Farm sold a Maine-Anjou for 1052kg at 172.5p totalling £1814 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Hewetson, Lords Close sold the top priced Blue x cow for 819kg at 192.5p totalling £1576 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Cleasby, Linden House’s run of Limousin cows topped at 758kg at 196.5p totalling £1489 to Michael Helliwell.

Once again a plainer show of dairy cast cows was on offer with all classes selling to match last week’s great trade.  Messrs Sloan & Son, Woodend Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 762kg at 161.5p totalling £1230 and Holstein x cows for 820kg at 145.5p totalling £1193 and 835kg at 141.5p totalling £1188 bought by Michael Helliwell, Sean McGimpsey and Phillip Bowes. Messrs Harrison, Breckney Hall sold a Holstein x cow for 861kg at 141.5p totalling £1218 and 896kg at 129.5p totalling £1160 bought by Sean McGimpsey and Les Fell. Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 854kg at 139.5p totalling £1101 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold the top priced Montbelairde x cow for 838kg at 140.5p totalling £1177 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Dockeray, Kelsick House sold a Holstein x cow for 831kg at 140.5p totalling £1167 to David Holmes. Messrs Ramsey, Dockray Hall sold the top priced Friesian cow for 724kg at 159.5p totalling £1154 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Graves, Home Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 192.5p. Messrs Harrison, Mounsey Bank sold a Holstein x heifer for 187.5p. Messrs Mallinson, Hallfield sold a Holstein x heifer for 182.5p.

CAST BULLS: 9 Stock bulls was of offer today.  Messrs Corlett, Skiddaw View sold a British Blue stock bull for 949kg at 155.5p totalling £1475 to Norman Bowe. Messrs Stevenson & Sons, Lower Langshaw Farm, sold a Limousin stock bull weighing 992kg at 146.5p totalling £1453 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: On Monday H&H held their weekly sale of 2981 prime sheep. The largest show of the season so far saw finish and quality well bid for. A large portion of leaner type lambs took their toll on the averages with an overall of 230p or £102.43 per head which still represents a phenomenal return for mid-September. Messrs Todd, Longhurst led the way at £158 for a pair of heavy Texel lambs which formed part of their consignment of 108 lambs which averages £127.34 per head. Top price per kilo was 351p paid for 41kg Dutch Texel lambs selling at £144 from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House.

CAST SHEEP: At the weekly sale 228 cast sheep were forward where another fantastic ringside of 11 active buyers ensured a great trade for all classes.  Topping the sale at £190 was a Texel ram lamb from Messrs Mallinson, The Hill.  Rams were exceptionally good to sell with the strongest tups easily selling in excess of £150.  Ewes sold to a top of £159 from Messrs Pearson, Parkgate where the strongest ewes sold at £140 upwards.  Blackies sold to a top of £85.  All ewes were very keenly bid for and many more can be sold on a weekly basis.
