Middleton Swaledale Gimmer Lamb Show & Sale

On Friday 17th September, Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held their Annual Show & Sale of 5600 Swaledale gimmer lambs within Middleton in Teesdale market.

The pre-sale judging fell into the capable hands of Mr Alan Bowman, Brampton and Mr Freddie Moore, Haltwhistle with Mr Ted Fox, Lanark standing as referee. As always the vendors brought forward a show of lambs befitting of the leading sale of gimmer lambs in the country. After much deliberation the Overall Championship, and also claiming the ‘A’ District shield for a third straight year, was the leading 10 consigned by Messrs Bainbridge, Dousgill Farm who also lead the consignment averages at £140.75 per head.

Out with the show the Swaledale lambs met a fantastic trade throughout capping off a fine week at Middleton Mart after also delivering the leading Mule lamb trade in the district on Wednesday. The Swales certainly did not disappoint with an overall average of £91.47 seeing a lift of £10 on the year. 18 vendors saw averages over £100 with over 100 lots selling beyond £110 per head. The leading price came courtesy of Messrs Raine, Stanhope Gate who led the way at £300 for their leading pen of 10 which sold to Messrs Collingwood, Stewart Shield Meadows, Stanhope.
