Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 20th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A much larger show of 105 prime bulls forward at the Borderway weekly sale whereby a fantastic trade was seen throughout. Top overall was a bull from a run of outstanding Limousins for Allan Campbell, Strawfrank Farm, Lanark achieving £2093.23 purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale. Messrs Campbell’s consignment averaged a whopping £2021.83. Simmentals to £1747.64 from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan and British Blues to £1707.38 from Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton and purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top price per kilo overall was one of two from Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill Farm, Workington achieving 266.5p and 262.5p for his other purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and Ralph Pearsons. Messrs Dale-Sunley, Ross Farm, Kirkcudbright sold to 262.5p for their Limousin. British Blues sold to 241.5p from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan. Black and white dairy bred bulls peaked at £1339.05 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Top price per kilo of 214.5p was paid to Messrs Preston, Wed Holme, Wigton for one of their Friesians. Messrs Preston’s run of 10 bulls averaged a healthy 208.9ppk.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger show of 43 Prime steers and heifers also selling fantastically well with 25 achieving above £1600 up to a day’s overall top of £2028.57 for a Charolais cross steer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Limousins to £1913 from the same home and £1903 for another from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby both purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top pence per kilo of 260.50 was paid to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton purchased by Eric Hall and two others to 259.5 from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.

Heifers peaked at £1863.23 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Wilson, Carskerdo Farm, Fife purchased by Eric Hall.  Limousins to £1762.82 from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith and a day’s overall top pence per kilo of 278.6 was received by Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and purchased by A & D Meats.

CAST COWS: A large entry of 364 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to the usual large ringside of buyers. Mr Ben Haigh, Breckonhill Farm sold the top priced British Blue cow for 795kg at 235.5p totalling £1872 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 766kg at 237.5p totalling £1819 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall’s run of cows topped at 788kg at 219.5p totalling £1729 for a Limousin x bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of Limousin cows topped at 726kgs at 223.5p totalling £1622 and 693kg at 224.5p totalling £1551 bought by Michael Helliwell and Owain Llyr. Messrs Cowx and Son, Hudscale sold a Limousin cow for 736kg at 214.5p totalling £1578 to Owain Llyr. DA Harrison and Co’s run of cows topped at 781kg at 187.5p totalling £1464 for a Limousin x bought by Messrs Roberts. Mr Iain Graham, Rose Castle Farm sold a Limousin cow for 656kg at 219.5p totalling £1439 to Jewitts. Messrs Airey, The Close’s run of cows topped at 782kg at 183.5p totalling £1434 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

An entry of 247 cast dairy cows was on offer with trade being less throughout.  Messrs Nixon, Ribton House’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 815kg at 144.5p totalling £1177 bought by Les Fell. Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank Farm, Lanark sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 636kg at 183.5p totalling £1167 to Robert Capper. Messrs Horsley, Whitrill Grange sold a Holstein x cow for 843kg at 137.5p totalling £1159 and 860kg at 130.5p totalling £1122 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Clark, Whins Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 802kg at 141.5p totalling £1134 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Martin, Boggle Hall sold a Friesian cow for 795kg at 138.5p totalling £1101 also to Les Fell. Messrs Brown, Lane End Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 561kg at 182.5p totalling £1023 and 654kg at 170.5p totalli8ng £1115 to Les Fell. Messrs Harrison, Mounsey Bank sold a Friesian heifer for 553kg at 198.5p totalling £1097 to Jewitt Meats. CAST BULLS: 7 stock bulls were on offer on Monday. Messrs Airey, Brownchesters sold two outstanding Limousin bulls for 1055kg at 174.5p totalling £1840 and 916kg at 179.5p totalling £1644 both bought by Owain Llyr. Thackwood Farms sold an Angus stock bull for 1029kg at 135.5p totalling £1394 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Gardhouse, Cumdivock Farm sold a Hereford at 1061kg at 125.5p totalling £1331 to Eric Hall.

PRIME SHEEP : At the weekly sale of Prime sheep, lambs were harder to come across this week with trade remaining at last week’s level proving to be a very successful result again leaving others in Borderways wake.  Top today was £149 for a top quality heavy Dutch Texel lamb from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Hexham which sold to Tony Harrison, Main Street, Cockermouth.  Messrs Wigham also topped per kilo at 333.3p for a pen of 43.5kg lambs which sold for £145 to Mr R Skelton.  The run of 51 from this home sold to average £132.49 or 300.11p for 44.15kg.  Suffolks sold to £127 from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle.  Mule lambs continue to sell well to £110 a head for heavies from Messrs Ridley, Wood Hall, Wigton.
