Borderway Store & Weanling Cattle Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Wednesday 22nd September Harrison & Hetherington had forward 1431 cattle at their weekly sale comprising of a catalogued entry of 634 Store Cattle, 309 Un-entered store bulls and weanlings 340 Calves and 148 dairy cattle in the Monthly Border and Lakeland Sale.

STORE CATTLE – Wednesday’s weekly sale of store cattle included the annual special consignment section.  A very mixed bag of cattle came forward with best types seeing what can only be described as an exceptional trade with 28 cattle selling over £1500, 59 sold over £1400 and 110 over £1300. Plainer and leaner types however were harder to place throughout the sale leaving an overall average of £1096.32 which saw cattle from £400 to £1800 represented.

The sale topper at £1800 was an exceptional Limousin bullock consigned by Messrs Phillips, Netherhill, Roadhead who sold 8 to average £1423.13. John Baty, Broomhill, Heathersgill sold Charolais bullocks to £1730 and £1710 whilst also claiming the special prize for the leading pen of 4 or more cattle when selling another pen of Charolais bullocks at £1610 with John’s run of bullocks averaging £1383. Gordon Kyle, Spoutbank sold his top end Charolais bullocks to £1620 for a pen of 3 with a pen of 4 at £1560 to see his average up £112 on the year at £1341 a head. Heifers sold to £1500 for Limousins from Messrs Kermode, Isle of Man. Native cattle sold to £1390 for an outstanding dairy bred Aberdeen Angus bullock from Messrs Miller, Tarn Lodge, Brampton.

WEANED CATTLE: A larger show of weaned cattle forward with 309 cattle forward.  Quality was very well sought after once again with all sections selling exceptionally well.

Bulls once again were easily sold with a top price of £1400 on 3 occasions.  Firstly for two Limousin x bulls from Messrs Oliver, Cawfields, Haltwhistle and secondly for a Hereford cross bull from Mrs Sue Dale Sunley, Airds of Balcray, Castle Douglas. Bullocks and heifers also sold very well with two Holstein Friesian heifers selling for £1105 from Hardgrove farm, Dumfries.   A very strong ring side was present for both Dairy bred and twice crossed cattle.
