Borderway Primestock Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 27th September Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of primestock. A smaller show of 400 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller entry of only 60 Prime bulls forward which received a red hot trade throughout with bulls peaking at £2134.50 for Limousins from Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan to £2077.22 for their Limousin and purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Simmentals to £1838.27 from Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg, Newton Stewart and purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Top overall pence per kilo of 269.50 and 268.5 was attained by Messrs Jenkinson, Whinfell Park, Messrs Miller, West Farm, Aspatria also sold to 260.50 for another  and the same vendors sold best British Blue cross to 247.50 purchased by Black Brow Abattoir, Wigton.  Black and whites bulls peaked at £1395.88 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and to a top price per kilo of 204.5 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Wilson, Street Head, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods.  Many more are required weekly.  Please advise entries for next week’s sale by call or text to the auctioneer Grant Anderson 07872 129274.

PRIME CATTLE: Again another good entry of 43 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale, whereby Prime cattle received one of the dearest trades seen so far this year with over half of the sale achieving £1600 plus to a top of £2056.28 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Hird, West End Farm, Cockermouth purchased by weekly buyers Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold their best for a run of 8 to £2013.56 for another Limousin cross heifer.  British Blue cross heifers from Messrs Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie peaked at £1821.33 and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butcher, Bradford.  Heifers averaged a healthy 265.5 ppk to a top of 293.5 for another Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Hird, West End and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Messrs Dickinson, Brockwoodlees best Limousin cross to 278.5p and was again purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers.  Messrs Lawson, Hundith House matched this trade and their heifer was purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Charolais crosses to 286.5 from Messrs Harrington, Hoskett Hill, Carlisle.

Steers peaked at £1991.55 and £1921.65 from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill, Brampton with their Limousin crosses and £1911.30 for another from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle.  Simmental crosses to £1821.51 from Messrs Dickinson, Brockwoodlees, Canonbie and was purchased by W E Fairlies, Letham.  Steers average 249.5 ppk to a top of 280.50 and 278.5 for quality from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill.  Many more could have been sold to vendors advantage.

CAST COWS: A great entry of 299 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer with trade being up for all classes.

Messrs Warren, Church Farm sold a British Blue cows for 844kg, 187.5ppk or £1382 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill sold the top priced Limousin cross cow for 830kg, 184.5ppk or £1531 to Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm run of well fed cows topped at 617kg, 237.5ppk or £!465 and to 397kg, 234.5ppk or £1399 and to 704kg, 197.5ppk or £1390 purchased by Jewitts and Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wilson, Low Farm sold young Limousin cross and British Blue cross cows for 639kg, 221.5ppk or £1415 and to 614kg, 219.5ppk or £1347 and 576kg, 215.5ppk or £1241 purchased by Sean McGimpsy and Owain Llyr.

A large entry of dairy cast cows were on offer with trade being sharer on the week. Messrs Nash, Philgowan, Newton Stewart sold the top priced British Friesian 654kg, 172.5ppk or £1128 to Les Fell and heifers from the same home to 177.5ppk or 166.5ppk both purchased by Mr Les Fell. Messrs Dixon, Whinney Hill sold a Holstein cross heifer to 605.kg , 175.5ppk or £1061 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Henderson & Son, Park House sold a Holstein cross heifer for 600kg, 174.5ppk or £1047 to Les Fell. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold a Montbeliarde cross cow for 790kg, 133.5ppk or £1054 to Sean McGimpsey.

PRIME SHEEP: As local market prices tumbled towards the end of last week Borderway storms ahead with a 4p rise on the week for a sale average of 235ppk, an SQQ of 238p and a price per head average of £104.65. Topping today’s sale at £185 per head and 475ppk was a fantastic Beltex lamb from Messrs A Little, The Hollands, all proceeds from this lamb were donated to Cancer Research UK. Once again this week quality shone through and lambs with good coverage or fed lambs saw greater returns with the best continental lamb easily selling in excess of 300ppk. Heavy lambs also remain very good to sell with 48kg+ reguklarly achieving £125-£147. Messrs Scott Thirlwall Castle sold his run of 31 Dutch Texel lambs to average £134.61 at 315.54ppk and a pen of 5 42kg lambs sold at 342.9p. Mule lambs sold to £110 from Messrs Routledge, Old Silloth. Messrs Wilson, Meadow Farm, Workington sold Suffolk lambs to a top of £147 and £140. Vendors travelling the extra miles to Borderway are definitely reaping the reward and more sheep can be sold with ease. 19 lots or 53 lambs sold in excess of £130, 54 lots sold in excess of £120, 12 lots or 43 lambs sold in excess of 300ppk and 60 lots sold in excess of 250ppk.

CAST SHEEP: The weekly sale of 239 cast ewes and rams was held on Monday. Trade topped at £136 from Messrs Jones, The Croft. More second rate ewes were forward with the dry spell taking effect, these ewes would be slightly easier on the week. Suffolk x ewes topped at £128 from Messrs Irving, New Sandsfield. Swaledale ewes sold to a top of £70 for a pen of 8 from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House. Once again a strong ringside of buyers were forward to ensure a;; sheep were fairly bid for.
