On Monday 4th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A larger entry of 86 Prime bulls forward selling a fraction easier on the week although still by far dearer than a month ago.  Top overall was a Limousin from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith achieving £2160.68 selling to A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold his to £2018.24.  Charolais crosses from Messrs Johnston, West Wharmley, Hexham peaked at £1926.13 and was purchased Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale and Parthenais to £1719.15 from Messrs Bradley, Marina House, Maryport purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Top pence per kilo of 255.50 was paid to Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat with one of their Limousins.  Black and white bulls peaked at £1421.38 for a Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and a top pence per kilo of 215.5 from the same vendors purchased this time by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE: A good entry of 41 prime steers and heifers were forward, but still only half the numbers required as Borderway sees trade burst through the roof. Heifers peaked at £2308.60 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, another from the same home sold to £1816.02 purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham. Limousin crosses sold to £1746.83 from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

Top overall pence per kilo of 297.5ppk was for the aforementioned from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory. Charolais crosses from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton to 179.5p purchased by Steven Wilson.

Steers to £2000.15 from Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton and to £1998.43 from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie purchased by Pioneer foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses to £1980.88 from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Steven Wilson. Aberdeen Angus crosses to £1671.43 from Messrs Murray, Whitehill Farm, Gordon, purchased by Eric Hall.

Top pence per kilo steer was a lovely Limousin cross from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill Farm, achieving 289.5ppk purchased by Kings Butchers, and Bothel Parks British Blue sold to 287.5ppk .

More cattle of all qualities are urgently required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand. Please ensure all cattle are penned by 10.45am, on the morning of the sale.

CAST COWS: The largest entry of 416 cast cows and stock bulls in the UK was on offer to an increased ring side of buyers which ensured a great trade. Mr Steven Illingworth, Howgillside sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 794kg at 255.5p totalling £2028 to Owain Llyr. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farms’ run of Limousin and British Blue x cows topped at 854kg at 187.5p totalling £1601 for a Limousin, 770kg at 199.5p totalling £1536 and 806kg at 187.5p totalling £1511 for Blue x’s purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick (x2) and Owain Llyr. David Allen, Ellerslea sold the top priced Simmental x cow for 729kg at 204.5p totalling £1490 to Eric Hall. Messrs Brown & Co, Mosshead Farm’s run of great cows topped at 857kg at 173.5p totalling £1486 and 664kg at 215.5p totalling £1430 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Oliver & Sons, Walton Woodhead sold a Limousin x cow for 814kgs at 177.5p totalling £1444 to Michael Helliwell. Thrimby Farms run of cows topped at 707kgs at 202.5p totalling £1431 and a Beef Shorthorn sold for 583kg at 229.5p totalling £1337 to Owain Llyr and Jewitt Meats. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold a Limousin x cow for 602kg at 226.5p totalling £1363 to Jewitt Meats.

A large entry of dairy cast cows was on offer with all classes being in demand and extra buyers coming to take advantage of the large entry at Borderway. Messrs Robinson, Burtholme Farm sold Holstein x cows to 952kg at 135.5p totalling £1289 to Steven Bowes.  Messrs Shaw, Crookdyke sold Holstein x cows for 753kg at 156.5p totalling £1178 also to Steven Bowes and a Holstein x heifer from the same home sold for 546kga t 166.5p totalling £909 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Nicholson, Cobble Hall Barn sold the top priced Montbelairde x cow for 915kg at 127.5p totalling £1166 to Les Fell. Messrs Armstrong, Wolfa sold a Holstein x cow for 948kg at 119.5p totalling £1132 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mandale & Son, Lambfield Farm sold the top priced Danish Red for 828kg at 135.5p totalling £1121 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall sold a Montbeliarde x cow for 806kg at 138.5p totalling £1116 to Robert Adams. Messrs Irving, Meinbank Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 801kg at 137.5p totalling £1101 to Les Fell. Messrs Neill & Sons, Thornington Farm sold Friesian heifers for 524kg at 180.5p totalling £945 to Rob Medcalf. Messrs Brown, Lane End Farm sold Holstein x heifer for 561kg at 177.5p totalling £995 to Les Fell. Messrs Baynes & Son, Marleycotes Walls sold the top priced Ayrshire heifer for 560kg at 168.5p totalling £943 to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: 9 stock bulls were on offer on Monday. Messrs Hutchinson, Chapel Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1084kg at 166.5p totalling £1804 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep drew a larger entry of 2508 head forward. A sharper trade for all classes saw an overall average of 240ppk and an SQQ of 242ppk being achieved, lambs with finish and weight sold to extreme rates. This saw 20 pens selling to excess of £140, 52 pens over £130 and 111 pens over £120. This given the average of £106.95 for all sold.

The top call of the day was £148 which was achieved 3 times, with lambs from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Messrs Pearson, Wavercroft and Messrs Brough, The Croft. Selling the top price per kilo was Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle who sold Dutch lambs to 350ppk. Suffolk lambs sold to £140 to lead a fabulous run of 372 consigned by Harry Emslie Farmers, Aberdeenshire. First cross Texel cross Mule lambs sold to £134 from Messrs Harrison, Brotherikeld, Holmrook who made their first trip to Borderway.

CAST SHEEP: A much larger show of horned and leaner cast ewes and rams were forward, topping at £84 for a Blackface ewe from Messrs Dixon, Stobbs. Swaledales sold to a top of £66 for a pen of 8 from Messrs Smith-Jackson, Hightown. Topping todays trade overall at £136 was a Texel from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House. The best ewes remaining easier to sell.
