Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association A District

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd held the 104th Great Annual Sale of Registered Swaledale Rams and Ram Lambs at Middleton in Teesdale Mart on behalf of the Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association “A” District on Wednesday 14th October.

A total entry of 267 rams were catalogues for sale which drew a large company of potential purchasers who had travelled from near and far for this ensure a pleasing days trading with both clearance and averages both improving on the year.

The pre sale Champion and Reserve were drawn from the large breeders class which saw 35 rams out to show and provided a great spectacle for onlookers, these two rams were both consigned by F & MP Allinson, West Brisco, both sired by a Haltcliffe ram. The Champion ‘West Briscoe Sparkler’ later sold for £16,000 and sold to Messrs Graham, Hunt House, Whitby.

The Reserve Champion sold to £3000 to another noted breeder, Messrs Alderson, Barras Farm, Kirkby Stephen.

Leading the day’s trade at £17,000 was the pen leader Grains O Beck Odd Job  from MF & KC Stobart, Grain O Beck, Lunedale which sold to S & K Emmott, Whitelees Farm, Blanchland.

Followed by Brisco Sultan from F & MP Allison again this time selling to £10,000 to Messrs Buckle, Bleathgill, Kirkby Stephen.

An Overall average for the shearling rams of £1237.85 for 181 sold, sees a rise of £87.65 per head, for 10 more sold on last years corresponding fixture.

Aged rams sold to £700 for the 1st prize ram consigned by H Pierson & Son, Friar House Farm, Whitby which sold to Messrs Ogden, Keighly.

A small offering of ram lambs sold to £650 for the pre sale Champion from Burncroft Farm, Eggleston selling to Messrs Dalton, Burntreeford, Cowshill
