On Monday 18th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A small entry of only 71 prime bulls forward selling even dearer than seen in a long time.  Top overall of £2039.30 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Workington sold top Limousin cross to £1948.95 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Charolais to £1610.90 from Messrs Wight, Carwood Farm, Biggar purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Top overall pence per kilo of 274.5p was paid to Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill for another Limousin cross which was also purchased by Ralph Pearson.  Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle sold second top to 269.5p.  Dairy bred bulls to £1587.52 for a Friesian from Messrs Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston, this animal achieved top price per kilo at 225.5p.  Many more of all quality and sizes are required weekly.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller show of only 40 prime steers and heifers forward with an outstanding trade received once again for a plainer show of cattle. Top overall was Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton selling a run of dairy bred British Blues finished to perfection to £1972.46 and £1936.12 both purchased by Pioneers Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle also into £1926.99. Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton Limousin cross attained £1921.54 and Charolais from Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport to £1867.06. Light Belted Galloway bullocks from Messrs Bell, Woodhall, Hexham sold to £1361.22 and purchased by Jewitt Meats Spennymoor. Messrs Wilson, Bowscale sold top price per kilo of 279.5p for the aforementioned Charolais cross and Limousin to 276.5p from Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton. Heifers peaked at £1828.58 from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth this heifer also acclaimed top overall pence per kilo of 284p and was purchased by WE Fairlie , Letham. Others to 278.5p from Messrs Harrington, Hosket Hill, Carlisle purchased by A & D Mead. Charolais sold to £1759.38 from Messrs Bell, Hallbankgate, Brampton purchased by Eric Hall. CAST COWS: Once again a large entry of 399 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a good ring side of buyers. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 767kg, 199.5ppk to Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Harry Emslie, Brae of Coynach run of cows topped at 1071kg, 136.5ppk or £1461 for an Aberdeen Angus cow purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick and Limousin heifers sold to 610kg, 239.5ppk or £1460 and to 586kg, 226.5ppk or £1327 to Eric Hall. Messrs Dalgleish, Douglas Hall sold a Limousin cow for 790kg 182.5ppk or £1441 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Gibson & Son Thornton Tower run of cows topped at 759kg, 187.5ppk or £1423 and to 614kg, 224.5ppk or £1378 to Mr Kirkpatrick and Jewitt Meats.

Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm sold a Limousin cow for 684kg, 207.5ppk or £1419 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Parson, Slealands cows topped at 850kg, 166.5ppk or £1415 for a Limousin cross to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Cowx & Son, Hudscales sold a Limousin cow for 748kg, 187.5ppk or £1402 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Watret, Muirfield sold a Limousin cross heifer for 523kg, 243.5ppk or £1273 to Eric Hall.

A plain show of dairy caws cows were on offer with trade being similar to last weeks. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House sold a Holstein cross cow for 740kg, 172.5ppk or £1276 to Les Fell. Messrs Hutchinson, The Hill sold a Holstein cross cow for 896kg, 127.5ppk or £1142 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Paisley, Micklethwaite Farm sold a Friesian heifer for 596kg, 187.5ppk or £1117 to Jewitts. Messrs Skelton, Gill Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 593kg, 177.5ppk or £1052 to Alan Jarvis. Seymour Farms sold a Holstein cross cow for 843kg, 123.5ppk or £1041 to Steven Bowes. Gerrard House Farm sold a Holstein cross cow for 878kg, 117.5ppk or £1031 also to Steven Bowes. Messrs Dodd, Roanstrees sold a British Friesian heifer for 562kg, 175.5ppk or £986 to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: Eight stock bulls were on offer with Messrs Harrison, Wigton Hill House Farm selling the top priced Charolais stock bull for 1058kg, 155.5ppk or £1645 to Bowland Foods, and a Limousin from the same home selling for 927kg, 139.5ppk or £1293 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Miller, Scaleshill Farm sold the top priced Hereford bull for 1088kg, 124.5ppk or £1354 to Eric Hall.

PRIME SHEEP: Another pleasing entry of 2500 prime sheep were forward at Borderway the week with trade being sharper for all classes on the week. One vendor even reported returns of up to £7 beyond those gained at the back end of the week. An overall average of 243p, SQQ 253p doesn’t tell the whole story with a show of lesser quality available to buyers whilst still returning a price per head average of £110.72. Leading the sale at £160 were two vendors Messrs Reid, Bengal, Lockerbie and Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, Hexham who sold a wonderful run of 40 Dutch Texel and Beltex x lambs to average £141.60 per head. Top per kilo was Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall who sold Beltex x Texel lambs to 370ppk. Suffolks sold to £135 from Messrs Emslie, Aberdeen and to 248.1p for a pen of 30 from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Carlisle. Mules peaked at £117 from Messrs Smith Jackson, Hightown, Hexham and 233p from Messrs Telford, High Park Foot, Roadhead.

CAST SHEEP: The weekly sale of 266 cast ewes were forward, with better fleshed ewes being easier to sell. Topping today’s trade at £200 was a Texel ram from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop. Ewes sold to £166 for a cracking Texel from Messrs Pattinson, Kinkry Hill. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall sold his consignment of 23 continental ewes to average £133.20. Mules to £91 from Messrs Graham, Stone Hall Farm and Blackfaced ewes sold to £86 for three from Messrs Dixon, The Stobbs. Leaner type ewes would be slightly easier on the week.
