Broughton Store Lamb Sale

Broughton in Furness Mart held their annual sale of wether lambs on Tuesday 19^th October with an exceptional turn out of lambs forward faced by a buzzing ringside of buyers all classes of sheep were very well bid for ensuring all vendors leaving highly delighted.

Top price of the day was secured by Messrs Hatton, Knott End Farm, Broughton Mills topping the sale at £87 for a pen of 10 Texel x lambs.

The trade of the day was for the fell lambs, both Herdwicks and Swaledales, with Herdwicks selling to a top of £64.50 for a pen of 20 from Messrs Ellwood, Baskell Farm, Ulpha with the same farm selling pens of 30 for a very respectable £60.50, £60 and £58.  Messrs McCartney, Booncrag also sold a pen of 24 to exceed the £60 barrier.

Swaledale wethers were also very easily sold with a top price of £52.50 being achieved by Messrs J McWilliam, Fold Farm with the full run of Swale wethers realising a sale average of £49.61.

The whole run of 1067 Herdwick wether lambs went on to average up at £51.16 with quality lambs selling to £54 plus, but the smallest of lambs in all breeds looked hardest to buy with all lambs on the day selling for £40 plus regardless of size.
