On Monday 25th October Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS: A much larger, yet plainer show of 106 prime bulls were forward with quality and better fleshed still very easily sold, to a top of £2183.60 for a Limousin from Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton, purchased by Bowland Foods Ltd. Messrs Preston, Townfoot, Penrith sold their best to £2143.05 and was purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale another made £2073.63 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Charolais to £1975.40 from Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouses, Dumfries purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Top overall pence per kilo of 266.5ppk was paid to Messrs Bowe, Midtown, Wigton for a Limousin cross and was purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. British Blue crosses from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold to 265.5ppk again to Ralph Pearson.
Black and whites peaked at £1374.53 for a British Friesian from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Jewitt Meats, another from Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith to £1320 and was purchased by Balckbrow Abattoir, Wigton. Messrs Mattocks also sold the top price per kilo of 216.5ppk for another.

PRIME CATTLE: A larger entry of 54 prime steers and heifers were forward, whereby one of the dearest trades was seen to date, with Steers selling to £2038.62 and six heifers achieving over 300ppk.
Top overall steer sold to £2038.62 was a superb British Blue cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and was purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. This same quality customer also purchased the top two Limousin crosses with the best at £2028.16 also from Bothel Parks and closely followed by £2025.64 for another from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie. Messrs Bell sold the top Simmental cross to £1794.78 and Charolais crosses from Messrs Wilson, Carskerdo Farm, Cupar to £1755.65 purchased by Eric Hall. Messrs Bowe’s aforementioned Limousin cross was the top steer price per kilo of 288.5ppk.
Heifers enjoyed a marvellous trade throughout with a days top of £1971.32 for an outstanding Limousin cross, this heifer was also top pence per kilo of 319.5ppk , and was purchased by W Lindsay’s Butchers Shop, Cockermouth. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold another to £1928.05, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel sold their top heifer to £1889.85 and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Charolais from Messrs Wilson, Casrskerdo, Cupar sold to £1669.85 and Longhorn crosses from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton to £1592.85. Six heifers to achieved 300ppk were 319.5ppk and 300ppk from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill, 313.5ppk and 301.5ppk from Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton, 207.5ppk from Messrs Dent, Elm House and 300ppk from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton.

CAST COWS: Another great entry of 356 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to a ring side of 20 buyers which ensured a sharper trade on the week. Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold two outstanding cows with a British Blue cow selling for 908kg at 231.5p totalling £2102 and a Limousin cow selling for 869kg at 217.5p totalling £1890 bought Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of 10 Limousin cows sold to average 833kg at 192p totalling £1602 and topped at 854kg at 243.5p totalling £2079, 824kg at 220.5p totalling £1816, 926kg at 183.5p totalling £1699 and 787kg at 211.5p totalling £1664 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick (x2) and Owain Llyr(x2). DA Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm’s run of well finished cows topped at 745kg at 243.5p totalling £1814 and 774kg at 203.5p totalling £1575 for Limousin x’s both purchased by Owain Llyr and 673kg at 217.5p totalling £1463 and Jewitt Meats. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold two outstanding Limousin cows for 819kg at 216.5p totalling £1773 and 876kg at 184.5p totalling £1616 bought by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, Howburn sold the top priced Blue x cow for 648kg at 228.5p totalling £1480 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Byers, Ellen Bank sold the top priced Simmental x cow for 645kg at 205.5p totalling £1325 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Bell & Son, Hilltop Farm sold Limousin cow for 706kg at 205.5p totalling £1450 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Wigham, Hargill House’s run of Limousin cows topped at 653kg at 204.5p totalling £1335 to Owain Llyr.
205 dairy cast cows were presented to extra buyers ensuring that trade was 5.5p up on the week. Messrs Neill & Sons, Thornington Farm sold Holstein x heifers for 608kg at 189.5p totalling £1152 and 606kg at 175.5p totalling £1063 both purchased by Les Fell. Messrs McCamley, Knockshiffnock Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 691kg at 163.5p totalling £1129 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Crichton & Son, Limekilns Farm sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 936kg at 118.5p totalling £1109 to Phillip Bowes. Castlesteads Farms sold a Holstein x cow for 918kg at 119.5p at £1097. Messrs Crichton, Newtonairds Farm sold a Montbeliarde x heifer for 576kg at 187.5p totalling £1080 to Robert Capper and a Holstein heifer for 548kg at 175.5p totalling £961 to Alan Jarvis. PRIME SHEEP: At the weekly sale of Prime sheep which brought forward another strong entry of 2425 head. Although quality types were thin on the ground with many more commercial export types forward a strong average of £109.38 per head stands up to any competition, this translates to 243ppk, SQQ 249p. Leading the sale at £160 was an exceptional Dutch Texel lamb consigned by Messrs R & M Scott, Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead who also led the pence per kilo category with a pen of 8 selling at 351.8p (41.5kg £146). Suffolk lambs sold to £143 for cracking pen from Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Penrith which also led the breed per kilo at 260p. CAST SHEEP: The weekly sale of cast ewes and rams saw an entry of 300 forward with over the half of the sale consisting of Swales. Topping today’s sale at £155 was a Charollais Ram from Messrs Harrison, Lesson Hall. Ewes sold to a top of £126 for 3 Texel cross ewes from Messrs Fisher, Geltside. Swales topped at £55 for 15 from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House. Meaty ewes continue to sell with ease, however more leaner types on offer proving more challenging to cash.
