On Monday 1st November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 88 prime bulls forward selling once again at a flying trade for all sizes, shapes and ages.  Topping the day overall was North Eastern farmers Messrs Watson, Bowsden Moor Farm, Berwick on Tweed with their Limousin totalling up to £2117.37 and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton sold  to £2062.28; Messrs Nixon, Huntershall, Wigton to £2054.22 all purchased by Bowland Foods and Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton to £2020.59 purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Aberdeen Angus crosses from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle to £1458.27 purchased by Black Brow Abattoir.  Top Overall pence per kilo of 266.50 was paid to Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe for one of their Limousins this was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold two at 255.5 purchased by Ralph Pearson and Bowland Foods with Messrs Lawson, Stubbsgill, Workington achieving 254.50 also to Ralph Pearson.  Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1267.70 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hill Head, Canonbie purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Messrs White, Steel Hall, Hexham sold their best to £1235.40 and Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton to £1231.43 purchased by Jewitt Meats and Bowland Foods with top overall pence per kilo of 217.50 was paid to Messrs White, Steel Hall for one of their Friesians.  Many could have been sold to vendors advantage.

PRIME CATTLE: PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 41 prime steers and heifers were forward whereby quality was down on the week, but trade would once again be up.

Topping the day’s overall was £2026.64 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle for his run of Limousin cross steers, purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold their best to £2007.78 and was purchased by WE Fairlie Ltd, Letham. British Blue crosses from the same home sold to £1903.79 and was purchased by Eric Hall. Top price per kilo steer was 272.5pppk and 271.5ppk paid to Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton with their Limousin crosses and both were purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Heifers seen a days top of £1837.05 from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Workington for a Limosuin cross, purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton best was £1704.16 for another Limousin cross, purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. Charolais crosses from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries sold to £1778.33, £1773.36 and £1746 all purchased by Pioneer Foods. The best pence per kilo of £3 was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers. Mr Wilson, also secured the second top pence per kilo of 289.5ppk from Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton. Simmental crosses from Messrs Little, Greenhill sold to 276.5ppk to A & D Meats, Rossendale and the aforementioned Charolais crosses from Messrs Neil, Upper Tinwald sold to a top of 271.5ppk.

CAST COWS: The largest entry to date of 487 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with trade being slightly easier on the week. Messrs Watson & Co, Bowsden Moor Farm’s run of cows topped at 1061kg at 151.5p totalling £1607 and 1089kg at 144.5p totalling £1573 for Charolais cows bought by Messrs Roberts & Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Nixon, Hunters Hall sold the top priced Limousin cow for 842kg at 183.5p totalling £1545 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Barclay, Harestone Farm’s run of cows topped at 934kg at 164.5p totalling £1536 for a Charolais bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm’s cows topped at 709kg at 215.5p totalling £1527 bought by George Watson. Messrs Gammie, Drumforber’s run of cows topped at 711kg at 213.5p totalling £1517 for a Limousin x to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Watson & Co’s Limousin cows topped at 768kg at 191.5p totalling £1470 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Robert Neill & Partners, Upper Nisbet Farm’s run of cows topped at 837kg at 173.5p totalling £1452 for a Blue x to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm sold a Limousin x heifer for 529kg at 237.5p totalling £1256 to Eric Hall. Messrs MacDonald, Ladyhousesteads sold a Limousin heifer for 567kg at 215.5p totalling £1221 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot’s Limousin cows topped at 577kg at 205.5p totalling £1185 to Jewitt Meats.

A plain show of dairy cast cows was on offer with trade being similar to last week. Messrs Irving, Bectonhall sold a Holstein x heifer for 721kg at 173.5p totalling £1250 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Bowe, Low Plains sold the top priced Fleckvieh Heifer for 620kg ta 174.5p totalling £1081 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Byers & Son, Woodslee sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 880kg at 121.5p totalling £1069 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Woodman & Son, Hill House sold a Holstein x heifer for 620kg at 167.5p totalling £1038 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Harrison, Bagrow Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 607kg at 168.5p totalling £1022 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dickinson, High House sold the top priced Friesian cow for 812kg at 124.5p totalling £1010 to Thomas Fell. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold the top price4d Fleckvieh cow for 854kg at 117.5p totalling £1003 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Maxwell, North Doddington sold a Friesian heifer for 512kg at 157.5p totalling £806.40 to Robert Capper. Messrs Thompson & Partner, Southfield sold Holstein x heifers for 491kg at 157.5p totalling £773 and 522kg at 156.5p totalling £816 to Thomas Fell.

CAST BULLS: 22 stock bulls and out of spec cattle were offered and topped at 896kg at 167.5p totalling £1500 and 852kg at 169.5p totalling £1444 for Limousin x bullocks to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Meek, Eland Hall Farm sold the top priced Angus stock bull for 1232kg at 115.5p totalling £1422 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: As expected, the weekends weather had a big effect on numbers with only 1766head forward this week.

The trade certainly rewarded those who braved the elements with an overall average of 255pppk and an SQQ of 265ppk or an overall average of £114.60.

Leading the sale per head and per kilo with two pairs of lambs was Messrs Bewley Mid Farm, Whitrigg at £154 per head or 359ppk. Suffolks sold to £146 from Emslie Farmers Ltd , Aberdeenshire and 255ppk from the same home.

Mules averaged £109.63 and sold to £131 from A & A Little, Hollands and to 241ppk from the same home.

More lambs are required weekly to satisfy demand.

CAST EWES & RAMS: The weekly sale sawn an entry of 200 forward where trade was far dearer on the week, with an overall sale average of £83 bring achieved. Topping today’s trade at £146 was a Texel ram from Messrs Elliot, Brankenhow, with Texel ewes topping at £120 from Messrs Stobart, The Square. Mules sold to a top of £97 for a pen of 15 from Messrs Dixon, Whinneyhill. Cheviot ewes peaked at £90. Bigger, meaty ewes were in massive a demand and numbers fell short of requirements.
