Kirkby Stephen Mart Prize Show & Sale of Suckled Calves

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their annual prize show and sale of Suckled Calves when a catalogued entry of 492 calves were on offer.

Topping the sale at £5000 was the second prized Haltered Limousin, a 8 month old Heifer consigned by Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm, Lockerbie and was sold to JCB Commercials.

Messrs Hayton, Asby Grange sold a 7 month old British Blue heifer to make £3100 selling to Messrs Slack, Newby, Penrith. With 10month old heifers from this home also selling to £1880 to Messrs Jarman.

The overall championship was awarded to a 9 month old Limousin heifer from Messrs Hardisty, How Hall, Ennerdale which sold for £2000 and was purchased by the judge David Jarman, Brow Top Farm, Branthwaite. Messrs Hardesty also sold 8 month old Limousin heifer selling to Messrs Hutchinson, Valley Farm.

The overall reserve champion was a 9 month old Limousin cross heifer which made £1900 also from Messrs Hardisty and being purchased by Messrs Miller, Crookdake Mill, Wigton.

Messrs Brown, Asby Hall sold 5 month old Limousin heifer to £2000 to Messrs Mellin, Long Preston.

Steers topped at £1375 for 7 month old Limousin cross from Messrs Taylor, Waterhouses, Asby which sold to Messrs Keel, Thirsk.

Messrs Bell, Haas Side sold 7 month old Limousin Steers to £1325 and £1300 with 9 month Limousin steers selling to £1310.

6 month old British Blue steers sold to £1300 from Messrs Taylor, Waterhouses with 7 month old Blonde steers also selling to £1300 from this same home.

Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House sold 8 month old British Blue steers to make £1300.

Messrs Peile, Greystoke Castle Farms sold 6 month old Charolais steers sold to top at £1200 with this same farming selling 6 month old Charolais heifers to £1105 twice.

Trade from start to finish was outstanding with heifers averaging £1074.66 (up £56.94) and steers averaged £1066.12 (up £97.94) to equate to an overall average of £1070.05 (up £80.24).

Over 50 active buyers were in attendance travelling from Stirlingshire in the north and Reading in the South.
