Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of Prime sheep on Tuesday night when 2875 sheep were forward consisting of 2265 prime lambs and 610 cast sheep.

The sale sopped at £169 by two different consignors first for a pair of 52kg Beltex cross lambs which were shown by Messrs Lee, Carkin Moor Farm, Richmond and bought by J Birkbeck.

Also making £169 was a 50kg Beltex cross lamb from Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park Farm, Dufton which also sold to J Birkbeck on behalf of Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

Topping at 383.7p/kg were a pen of 43kg Beltex cross lambs which made £165 also consigned by Messrs Wills, Fawcett Park Farm.

Messrs Lee, Carking Moor Farm also sold a pen of three 52kg cross lambs to make £166 selling to West Scottish Lamb, with another two pens of 49kg lambs from this home selling to make £164.

Messrs Sowerby, Terrys Farm, Ormside sold a pair of 59kg Beltex cross lambs to make £164 selling to Dowdings Butchers, Appleby.

There seems to be no let up in the sheep trade at all with a further rise being witnessed once again here at Kirkby Stephen and an overall sale average of 261.06p and an SQQ of 265.3p/kg being achieved.

Mule lambs topped at £144 from Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm, Shap which were bought by M Helliwell.

Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton sold a pen of twelve 55kg Mules to make £132.50.

Mules also topped at 252.2p/kg for a pen of twenty six 46kg lambs which made £116 from Messrs Raine & Davidson, Thorney Gale, with another pen of twenty-six 47kg Mule lambs from this home making £118 (251.1p/kg).

A ring full of 50 Mule lambs sold to make £126.50 from Messrs Gowland, Ireshopeburn.

Texel cross Mule lambs sold to 270p/kg for a pen of ten 45kg lambs making £121.50 from Messrs Lawson, Stubsgill Farm, Workington.

Swaledale lambs topped at £120 for 54kg lambs from Messrs Wearmouth, Parkside, Barnard Castle.

Swaledales also topped at 238.2p/kg for a pen of eighteen 34kg lambs which sold for £81 from Messrs Bainbridge, Dousgill Farm, Richmond.

Light lambs were a flying trade with a pen of 37kg lambs selling for £131.50 (355.4p/kg) from Messrs Lee, Richmond.

A pen of 33kg lambs also sold to make £110.50 (334.8p/kg) from Messrs Martin, Soulby.

Heavy lambs were also as dear as they have been seen with a pen of 55kg lambs making £155 (281.8p/kg) from Messrs Lee, Richmond. Also a pen of 54kg lambs making £155.50 (288p/kg), and a pen of seven 53kg lambs making £156 (294.3p/kg) also from this same home.

Messrs Lawson, Hundith House also sold 54kg Texel cross lambs to £150 (277.8p/kg)

428 Beltex cross lambs sold to average £130.90 & 302p/kg

22 pens and 56 lambs sold between £150-£169

67 pens and 223 lambs sold between £140-£169

122 pens and 462 lambs sold between £130-£169

47 pens and 170 lambs sold between 310-383p/kg.

Cast sheep topped at £160 for a pen of five Texel cross ewes from Messrs Slater, Whiteley Hey Farm, Macclesfield.

All classes of cast sheep were also dearer with many being a good £10-£15 up and many more can be sold well on a weekly basis to extra demand!
