On Monday 15th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS: Yet another healthy show of 91 Prime bulls forward selling very easily once again for all shapes, sizes and qualities. 18 bulls sold over £1700 with 4 selling over £2000 to a top of £2181.01 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan. Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat to £2175.38 both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Connell, Wanton Walls, Lauder to £2113.75 purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale. British Blues crosses to £2024.01 from Upper Brydekirk once again purchased by Bowland Foods. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold a good run of bulls to a top of £1969.61 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Simmentals to £1923.21 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and purchased by A & D Meats. Top overall pence per kilo of 275.5 was a British Blue from Messrs Carr, Little Bavington, Newcastle and purchased by Bowland Foods.
Dairy bred bulls sold to a days top of £1425.16 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armour, Milton, Moffat purchased by A & D Meats. Top pence per kilo of 205.50 was attained by Messrs Mattocks, Aulby, Penrith on two occasions from British Friesians both bought by Bowland Foods.

PRIME CATTLE: The largest show seen for a while with 80 prime steers and heifers forward resulting in a fantastic trade throughout the sale for all classes. 20 cattle sold in excess of £1700 up to a day’s top of £1994.96. Topping the sale for the third week running was Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle. This superb Limousin cross was purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham. Messrs Dixon sold another to £1932.98. Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold their best to £1902.16 both purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Dairy bred British Blue crosses sold to a top of £1812.51 from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton purchased by Eric Hall. A run of Blue Grey traditional steers from Messrs Ireland, New House, Holmrook sold to a top of £1411.58. Charolais from Messrs Wilson, Bowscale, Maryport sold to £1832 again purchased by Pioneer Foods. Top price per kilo steer was for another from Elm House for Messrs Dent, peaking at 278.5p purchased by Pioneer Foods.
Heifers also forward in very good numbers and quality seeing a day’s top for new vendors Messrs Smith, North Boig, Cumnock, Ayrshire who saw their days trading peak at £1962.23 and take the top overall pence per kilo of 309.5p purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Closely followed by another at £1952 from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Carlisle. This heifer was also second top price per kilo overall at 307.5p. Messrs Norman, Little Orton, Carlisle sold their best to £1856.58 purchased by Pioneer Foods. Charolais crosses from Messrs Neil, Upper Tinwald Farm, Dumfries sold to £1769.74 and £1738.14 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses from Messrs Wilson, Carskerdo, Fife peaked at £1730.03 purchased by Eric Hall. Other heifers to sell to 301.5ppk was a Limousin from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. CAST COWS: A great entry of 400 cast cows, stock bulls and out of spec cattle were presented to a very keen ringside of buyers ensuring that a lot of new vendors to Borderway left happy.
Messrs Thompson, How Burn, Alston sold the tope priced British Blue cross cow for 698kg, 234.5ppk or £1636 and to 639kg, 219.5ppk or £1402 to Owain Llyr and Alan Jarvis. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House, Wigton run of cows topped at 710kg, 228.5ppk or £1622 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 896kg, 173.5ppk or £1554 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Mr George Wilson, Riddings Limosuin cows topped at 651kg, 224.5ppk or £1461 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Teasdale, Colstons, Penrith sold a British Blue cross cow for 598kg, 233.5ppk or £1396 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Robert Neill & Partners, Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh run of cows topped at 669kg, 199.5ppk or £1334 and to 723kg, 189.5ppk or £1370 both to Owain Llyr. A great entry of 288 dairy cast cows were on offer with trade again sharper on the week with averages up by 3-5p.

Messrs Elliot, Askrigg Hall sold the top priced Fleckvieh heifer for 756kg, 185.5ppk or £1402 also to Mr McGimpsey. Crossfell House Farm, Kirkby Thore sold Holstein cross heifers to 725kg, 177.5ppk or £1186 and to 636kg, 176.5ppk or £1122 to Alan Jarvis and Les Fell. Messrs Grierson, Musgrave Hall sold a Holstein cross heifer for 675kg, 174.5ppk or £1177 to Mr McGimpsey. Messrs Graham & Sons, Campfield Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 950kg, 145.5ppk or £1382 to Rob Medcalfe. Messrs Mitchinson & Sons, Gallowberry sold a Limousin stock bull for 1074kg, 123.5ppk or £1326 to Mr Kirkpatrick. A 41month old Highland bullock from Messrs Hewitt, Bank Head. sold for 544kg, 151.5ppk or £824 to Mr David Holmes.

PRIME SHEEP: Numbers remained consistent on the week with Borderway posting another strong result. Levelling at 282p with an SQQ of 292p – this being well ahead of other outlets last week. A top call of £178 was paid for Beltex lambs from Messrs Whiteford, Tercrosset with another pen of 5 from the same home selling at a sale leading 414.5p (41.5kg at £172). All classes were very well bid for and sold, with numbers nowhere near the required rate for this time of year resulting in an average of £126.50 being achieved.

CAST EWES & RAMS: An entry of 300 cast ewes and rams were forward, with trade being far dearer for all classes. Topping today’s sale at £142 was a Texel we from Messrs Hennessy, Orton Rigg. Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburne sold his run of Beltex rams to average £128. Mule ewes sold exceptionally well, topping at £108 from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House. Horned ewes were also sharper with Blackfaced up to £86 from Messrs Dixon, The Stubbs. An increased ringside of 11 active buyers ensured all ewes were all bid for.
