On Monday 29th November Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock. A great entry of 450 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle were on offer on Monday.

PRIME BULLS: A good entry of 87 prime bulls forward with 15 forward for the Christmas Primestock Show which was kindly judged by George Cropper Snr of Cropper Butchers and Deli. Top overall bull at £2246.52 was a Limousin from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Others to join the two-thousand-pound club were Messrs Common, Crossdykes, Lockerbie attaining £2221.31 and £2211.29. Messrs Graham, Rose Castle, Carlisle sold one to £2176.88 and Messrs Hardisty, How Hall, Ennerdale to £2072.46 all of the above purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold top British Blue cross to £2140.64 and an Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Hird, Town Head, Wigton sold to £1693.25. Top overall price per kilo of 289.5p was paid to Messrs Priestley for the aforementioned. Messrs Miller, West Farm sold their best to 278.5p purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers Bradford. Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1437.24 for Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins Farm, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and a top price per kilo of 215.5p was attained by Messrs Mattocks, Aulby Farm, Preston and 214.5p by Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton all purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE: On Monday the firm held their annual Christmas show and sale of 70 prime steers and heifers. The pre-sale show was ably judged by John Mellin of Croppers Butchers and Deli, Accrington who had a fantastic array of quality presented to him by near and far customers. Top overall award went to Messrs Grainger, Kiln Close, Wigton with their Limousin cross heifer which later sold to £2524.05 (355ppk) and was purchased by regular buyers R & JP Mulholland, Great Orton, Carlisle this heifer will be available to buy over the festive period in their quality Butchers Shop. Next best on the day was the Reserve Overall Champion from regular supporters of Borderway Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby. This Charolais cross heifer later sold to £2328.25 (335ppk) and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle, this heifer will also be available to buy in the Corby Hill shop. Besides the show Champion steers peaked at £2147.57 from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel, Wigton sold more to £2130 and £2118 purchased by Pioneer Foods and Steven Wilson Butchers. Charolais crosses from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton sold to £2019.96 purchased by Pioneer Foods. British Blue crosses from Messrs Dent, Elm House sold to £1946.76 and was purchased by Frasers Butchers, Stranraer winner of the traditional class was a Belted Galloway steer from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan which sold to £1938.51 and was purchased by Eric Hall. The Millers of Allerby Hall, Wigton sold Aberdeen Angus crosses to £1828.84 and were purchased by Pioneer Foods. Heifers sold to £2104.67 for a British Blue cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton sold another to £1998.57 purchased by Steven Wilson. Charolais from Messrs Barker, Middle Bank End Farm, Appleby sold to £2127.83 and Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries’ best Charolais was £2085.98 purchased by Fraser Butchers, Stranraer.

CAST COWS: A slightly smaller show of 304 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to an increased ring side of buyers. 103 beef cows averaged 156.6ppk up 15p on the week, once again insuring trade was sharper on the week.

In the show classes, Messrs Watret Muirfield won first prize British Blue cow which sold for 1051kg, 209.5ppk or £2201 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Lawson, Hundith House sold the top priced Limousin cross cow, which was also won first prize in her class sold for 935kg, 219.5ppk or £2052 also to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brown sold a Limosuin cross for 832kg, 215.5ppk or £1792 once again to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mackay, Harelaw Farm sold a young Limousin cow for 754kg, 235.5ppk or £1775 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor run of Limousin cows topped at 792kg, 216.5ppk or £1714 to Jewitts.Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm sold two cows for 793kg, 210.5ppk or £1669 and to 740kg, 209.5ppk or £1550 both to Owain Llyr. Messrs Pattinson, Kinkry Hill Farm, sold a British Blue cow for 766kg, 217.5ppk or £1666 to regular buyer Mr Kirkpatrick.Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm sold a Limousin cross heifer for 695kg, 237.5ppk or £1650 and to 619kg, 219.5ppk or £1358 to Eric Hall and Mr Kirkpatrick.Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside sold two young Limosuin cows for 655kg, 235.5ppk or £1542 and 710kg, 235.5ppk or £1542 and to 710kg, 205.5ppk or £1459 purchased also by Mr Kirkpatrick and Jewitts.Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm run of Limousin cross cows topped at 653kg, 232.5ppk or £1518 to Jewitts. All classes of 188 dairy cast cows were in great demand with trade again being up 6.3ppk to average an amazing 110.8ppk. Hardgrove Farms, Dumfries sold a Holstein cross cows, topping at 873kg, 136.5ppk or £1191 to Sean McGimpey. Messrs Tait & Co, Raethorn sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 694kg, 171.5ppk or £1190 and 570kg, 179.5ppk or £1023 both purchased by Robert Capper. Messrs Reed, Croft House sold British Friesian heifers for 640kg, 183.5ppk or £1174 and to 600kg, 181.5ppk or £1089 and to 511kg, 191.5ppk or £978 to Sean McGimpsey, Alan Jarvis and Eric Hall. Messrs Fisher & Co, Geltside Farm sold the top priced Swedish Red cow for 729kg, 144.5ppk or £1053 to Philip Bowes. Messrs Workman, Beeches Farm sold the top priced Montbelairde cross heifers which sold for 601kg, 173.5ppk or £1042 to Alan Jarvis. CAST BULLS: Eleven stock bulls were on offer, with Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside sold a Limousin  stock bull for 944kg, 192.5ppk or £1817 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Harryman, Keskadale sold a Limousin stock bull for 933kg, 173.5ppk or £1618 also to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime and cast sheep saw 1966 head forward. This weeks sale included the Annual Christmas show and sale which was expertly judged by local butcher Mr Steven Wilson, Corby Hill whom we sincerely thank for his time. A marvellous show of over 170 lambs were turned out for Steven to cast his eye over. After working though the classes the winning pen of Beltex lambs from Messrs Sanderson, Swallowdene, Dearham this pen were all sired by a Borderesk tup purchased out of Borderway. Weighing 50kg they sold at £450 to Mr R Skelton on behalf of a retained butcher client. Reserve honours also travelled west to Messrs Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport with the 1st prize pen of Texel lambs they sold at £255 per head to the judge. Leading the single class was Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton with a Dutch Texel which sold at £210 again to the judge.

Out with the show Borderway once gain romped home the winners posting an unmatchable average of 297ppk, 301p SQQ which translates to £133.53 per head. Sixteen pens of sheep sold over 400ppk.
