On Monday 6th December, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sales of Primestock. A great entry of 346 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle along with 2483 prime and cast sheep were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A marvellous quality show of 91 prime bulls were forward with 6 selling over £2000, 9 over £1900, 14 over £1800, and to a new record of £2425.26 for a 996kg Limousin from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanark. Messrs Nimmo sold a second to £2142.59, Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith best was at £2285.61. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe, Wigton to £2147.74, all purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Finally Messrs Thompson second best was £2070.45 and Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick peaked at £2023.79 both purchase by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Lanarkshire sold three bulls to average a swelling £2162.72. Messrs Hird, Town Head, Wigton sold the best Charolais cross to £1833.89 and was purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale. Aberdeen Angus crosses to £1663.88 from Messrs Hyslop, Gillrigg, Lockerbie purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and British Blues to £1655.01 from Messrs Wilson, Low Farm, Wigton. Top overall pence per kilo of 271.5ppk was attained twice by Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank Farm, Lanark, for Limousins.

Dairy bred bulls were short of demand and were seen to peak at £1289.54 for a Montbelairde from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Selling to £1222.73 was a British Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton. Ayrshires to £1213.17 from Messrs Armstrong, Plasketlands, Maryport. Top pence per kilo of 217.5ppk was paid to Messrs Reed, Croft House, Wigton, all were purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another great entry of 72 prime steers and heifers forward at the weekly sale, seeinga day’s top of £1972.20 for a Limousin cross steer from regular vendors Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby selling to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Smith, North Boig, Ayrshire wasn’t far behind selling theirs to £1945.20 and Messrs Cape, Kirkland Guards, Wigton to £1931 again purchased by Pioneer Foods. Charolais crosses from Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie to £1889.16and was sold to Mr Eric Hall. Top steer pence per kilo of 275.5ppk went to Messrs Smith, North Boig, for the aforementioned.

Heifers forward again in good numbers, peaking at £1901.20 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries, purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Messrs Neill, Upper Tinward sold three Charolais heifers to average £1879.11 for 740kg. Limousin crosses peaked at £1769.81 from Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and the same firm sold another to £1751.63 purchased by WE Fairlie, Letham. Top overall pence per kilo of 313.5ppk was obtained by Messrs Dent, Elm House with one of their Limousin crosses. DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold another to 301.5ppk both of which were purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais cross heifers peaked at 281.5ppk from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands Farm, Maryport and was purchased by Conor Mulholand of R & JP Mulholland Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.

CAST COWS: A massive entry of 346 cast cows, bulls and out of spec cattle were on offer to a keen ringside of buyers which ensured one of the dearest trades for weeks.

Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm, Lockerbie sold the top prices Limousin cow for 909kg, 183.5ppk or £1668 purchased by Morgan Helliwell. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm, Wigton sold a Limousin cow for 889kg, 183.5ppk or £1631 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm sold a Limousin cow for 804kg, 199.5ppk or £1603 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm sold a Limosuin cow for 869kg, 184.5ppk or £1603 to David Holmes. Messrs Thompson, How Burn sold the top priced British Blue cross cow for 828kg, 193.5ppk or £1602 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Paterson, Hartbush Farm, Dumfries Simmental cows sold to 982kg, 157.5ppk or £1546 and to 770kg, 1995.5ppk or £1536 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Walton & Sons, Greyside Farm, Hexham sold a British Blue cross young cow for 532kg, 215.5ppk, £1146 to Eric Hall. Pearsbyhall Farming run of cows topped at 651kg, 207.5ppk or £1350 for a Limousin cross bought by Robert Capper. Messrs Reay & Sons, West Moorhouses, Newcastle Upon Tyne sold a Limousin young cow for 616kg, 207.5ppk or £1278 also to Robert Capper. Messrs Forster, Brackenthwaite Farm sold a Hereford cross heifer for 690kg, 199.5ppk or £1376 to Eric Hall.

A total of 222 dairy cast cows were on offer to one of the dearest trades for some time and vendors went away highly delighted. Messrs Swainson & Son, Moor Park Farm sold a Montbelairde cross heifer for 679kg, 191.5ppk or £1300 to Capper Farming. Messrs Carruthers, Glenzierfoot Farm sold the top priced Fleckvieh cross heifer for 658kg, 191.5ppk or £1260 also to Capper Farming. Messrs Neill & Son, Thornington Farm sold the top priced British Friesian heifer for 646kg, 193.5ppk or £1250 to Jewitts. Messrs Coulthard & Son, Brisco Hill sold the top priced Holstein cross heifers for 671kg, 178.5ppk or £1197 to Les Fell. Messrs Jackson, Skelton, Wood End sold Friesian heifers for 629kg, 186.5ppk or £1173 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 847kg, 143.5ppk or £1215 to Philip Bowes. Messrs Suddart, Sandraw Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross cow for 866kg, 127.5ppk or 31104 also to Phillip Bowes. CAST BULLS: 10 stock bulls and out of spec cattle were on offer, with Messrs Walton & Son, Greyside Farm selling a Limousin stock bull for 976kg, 154.5ppk or £1507 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Ritson, The Barns sold a 77 month old Aberdeen Angus bullock for 758kg, 153.5ppk or £1163 to Phillip Bowes.

PRIME SHEEP: Their weekly sale of 2283 prime sheep. Another scintillating trade was achieved at Borderway this week with an overall average of 298p, SQQ of 302p placing Carlisle firmly at the top of the standings once more. An incredible 58 pens sold over £150 with 11 pens 400ppk. Topping the sale at £182 wwre heavy Texel hoggs from Messrs Bell, 59 Main Street Cockermouth. Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall sold a pen of 13 Beltex lambs at 437.5ppk to lead this section, this translates to 40kg at £175. Tom and Julia Airey, New Grange, Dearham sold a fabulous run of 27 lambs to average £165.26 per head to a top of £178 a head. Mules sold to £140 from Messrs Bell, Scarrowmanwick and 283ppk from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House.

CAST EWES & RAMS: The weekly sale of cast ewes had an entry of 200 foreward, with meat being a flyer again fleshly ewes sold with ease. Topping today’s sale at £153 was a Texel cross from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop. Meaty Texel Mule ewes regularly sold in excess of £130. Mules sold exceptionally well topping at £117 with pen fulls selling to £108+. Swales topped at £97 for 2 cracking ewes from Messrs Wigham, Cold Shield with Cheviot ewes topping at £90. All classes of ewes continue to fly with numbers starting to tighten nationally.
