The females were in demand at Carlisle on Saturday, taking both the overall Championship and the top price of the day at 1800gns. The lovely lady taking the honours was an in lamb shearling ewe from Graham & Judith Galbraith from Kendal. Graylen 24Y2004279 sired by Graylen Laird, has figures to match her style and was sold in lamb to Yarcombe Hero who is in the top 1% for both maternal and terminal sire index and gigot muscularity. She will join the Red Syke Flock of Sarah Miles in Ulverston.
The long trip north was worthwhile for Jon Barnard & Justine McPherson from Devon when they sold their senior in lamb ewe for 1050gns. Stourfield 90Y1801219 is by Ashley Blackjack and was sold in lamb to Stourfield Eric. Lorna Vevers from Dumfriesshire was the winning bidder for this one.
The next top price was 1000gns for E, B & S.A Jones of Pembrokeshire. This Maes Glas in lamb shearling ewe, 57U2001273 was crowned Champion Wool on the Hoof at The Great Yorkshire Show this year and was sold in lamb to Maes Glas Hercules. She heads over the border to P Parker of Dumfriesshire.
Five further in lamb lots sold for 900gns and above.
The ewe lambs were also keenly sought after with a top of 800gns for another vendor making a long trip from the South West. Adrian Rundle from Cornwall sold his first prize ewe lamb Treworthal B832100222, by Lecropt Challenger and out of a Yarcombe ewe, to the judge Roy McFarlane from Stirling.
Maiden shearling ewes topped at 620gns for John Craig of Settle, North Yorkshire. Lumb A312000732 was March 2020 born and by Morley Gent and took the eye of D & S Taylor from Berwickshire.
Rams achieved a top bid of 550gns for the youngest ram lamb on offer from Frances Glass & James Robinson from Aberdeenshire. The smart Eninteer A862101576 is March born and sired by Isle of Bute Trooper who has a terminal index of 348 and heads to the Normanby Flock of Ed Brant in Lincolnshire.
Male Champion, a shearling ram from Jim & Jane Birkwood, Grimsby sold for 480gns. Thorbeck Musketeer 80X2000589, sired by Rennisons Alistair had already worked as a lamb and was purchased by Faughill Farm, Roxburghshire.
