On Monday 13th December, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: Over 80 prime bulls forward at Borderway weekly sale seeing a very mixed quality and a lesser trade achieved throughout the sale for most classes especially the plainer end.  Top overall was a British Blue from Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle peaking at £1843.30 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Limousins from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan sold to a top of £1785.36 purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Beef Shorthorns from Messrs Frame, Little Galla, Biggar sold to £1750.70 purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Charolais crosses to £1700.93 from Messrs Hird, Town Head, Wigton purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale.  Top overall pence per kilo of 261.5p for a Limousin cross from Seymour Farms, Wigton and purchased by Ralph Pearson.  Black and whites sold to £1225 for a Holstein Friesian form Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston and a day’s top price per kilo of 203.5p for a British Friesian from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another very good entry of 63 prime steers and heifers forward, trade would be easier on the week by 8-10p and there was also far less quality on offer.  Top overall was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg Farm, Egremont who peaked at £1.70 short of £2000 equating at £1998.21.  The same vendor also sold top Charolais cross steer to £1949.30 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton sold the best British Blue cross to £1782 and was purchased by W E Fairlie, Letham.  Top overall pence per kilo steers were a Limousin crosses from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and another from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle both attaining 265.5p.  Heifers saw a top of £1797.80 from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries for one of their Charolais crosses.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Park, Wigton sold their best British Blue cross to £1754.96 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Graham, Rose Castle, Carlisle sold top priced Limousin cross heifer to £1684.05 and purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Top overall pence per kilo of the day was a British Blue from Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm, Barnard Castle peaking at 277.5p and was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Limousins sold to 274p from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby and purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.

CAST COWS: A great entry of 407 cast cows, stock bulls and out of spec cattle were on offer with a keen ringside of buyers ensuring that Borderway leads the way for cast cows. Messrs Morley, Petteril Bank Farm sold a Limousin cow for 852kg at 207.5p totalling £1767 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Mews, Glendue Farm, Hexham sold the top priced British Blue cow for 811kg at 197.5p totalling £1601 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, Townfoot’s run of cows topped at 852kg at 187.5p totalling £1597 bought by Owain Llyr and 633kg at 203.5p totalling £1288. Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm’s run of Limousin cows topped at 860kg at 175.5p totalling £1509 to Steven Helliwell. Messrs Robert Neill & Partners, Upper Nisbet Farm, Jedburgh’s run of cows topped at 741kg at 192.5p totalling £1426 and 588kg at 207.5p totalling £1220 for two Aberdeen Angus and 819kg at 173.5p totalling £1420 for a Limousin x and 837kg at 164.5p totalling £1376 for a British Blue purchased by Les Fell, Sean McGimpsey, Messrs Roberts and Steven Helliwell. Messrs Wood, Waters Farm sold the top priced Charolais cow for 819kg at 173.5p totalling £1420 to Alan Jarvis.

All classes of the 288 dairy cast cows forward were again in great demand. Messrs Robinson, Burthholme Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 708kg at 176.5p totalling £1249 to Les Fell. Messrs Dockeray, Kelsick House sold a Holstein x heifer for 665kg at 182.5p totalling £1213 also to Les Fell. Messrs Harrison, Woodhouse sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 857kg at 138.5p totalling £1186 to Steven Bowes. Messrs Mitchell & Sons, Mirkbooths sold a Holstein x heifer for 664kg at 177.5p totalling £1178 to Les Fell. Messrs Beaty, Langhorn Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 838kg at 140.5p totalling £1177 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Edgar & Co, Whitecroft Mains sold the top priced Fleckvieh cow for 817kg at 143.5p totalling £1172 to Les Fell. Messrs Reed, Croft House sold the top priced Friesian cow for 797kg at 137.5p totalling £1095 to Sean McGimpsey.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown sdolf the top priced Bazadaise stock bull for 1075kg at 152.5p totalling £1639 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Farm sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for 1169kg at 139.5p totalling £1630 also to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Johnston, West Wharmley sold a Limousin stock bull for 1154kg at 134.5p totalling £1552 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Jewitt, Gracies Farm sold a British Blue stock bull for 915kg at 159.5p totalling £1459 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep attracted a similar number to last week though with a plainer show forward a sale average of £129.56 per head is no mean feat. This with an overall average of 285p, SQQ295p still seeing Borderway leading the way. An individual lamb from Messrs Musgrave, Cardew Hall, Dalston led the way at £192 or 468.3ppk for a 41kg Beltex. Another 9 runs sold over 400ppk with 40 pens over £150 a head.

CAST EWES & RAMS: 200 cast ewes and rams forward at the weekly sale with a fantastic trade once again. Topping today’s sale at £178 was a cracking Texel ewe from Messrs Telford, Edenlin. Meaty ewes continue to lift in value. Mule sold to a top of £118 from Messrs Middleton, Stonehouse with many mules selling in the teens. Blackfaced ewes sold to £103 from Messrs Dixon, The Stobbs.
