Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

ESPLAND TOP CHRISTMAS SALE AT BORDERWAY

The final dairy sale of 2021 to be staged at the Borderway Sale Centre featured 100 Pedigree Holstein cattle in the Border & Lakeland Christmas event.  Thirty buyers from seven counties across the north of England and Scotland had a super quality group of cows and heifers to select from with several animals bred from elite pedigrees.  Trade topped at 3,000gns on three occasions with the overall average coming to £2083 per life with 57 animals selling for or more than £2000.

The dairy team at H&H would like to thank everyone you have consigned or purchased cattle during 2021 and would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and prosperous 2022.

Dugdale Nutrition sponsored the show and Alistair Marshall from Hardgrove Farms, Dumfries judged the pre sale classes.  For the fifth consecutive month the Overall Champion went to the Espland herd owned by the Cannon family from near Appleyby who are dispersing their herd in the monthly sale.  Espland Chip Sadie was sired by Gold Chip and was bred from three generations of Very Good dams.  She sold for 3,000gns to the Oldfield family from near Gisburn.  Another 11 cows and heifers sold for this home to average £2104 with Espalnd Zelgadis Anthea selling for 2,400gns to the Mlllar’s who farm near Kirkpatrick Fleming.

The Reserve Champion went to the second place senior heifer who was consigned by the Grahams from Anguswell Farm.  Heathersgill Moemoney Eillen was sired by Bacon-Hill Moemoney and was bred from a sold cow family with five generations of Excellent or Very Good dams.  Another impressive heifer from this home was Heathersgill Tatoo Mauritsa who was sired by Tatoo and was bred from a deep pedigree with nine Excellent or Very Good dams tracing back to the famous Grove herd.  Both heifers sold for 2,400gns to the Taylor family from near Lockerbie.

One of the most attractive pedigrees in the catalogue was consigned by Peter Kemp from Aberdeen.  She was Berryholme Dealmaker Rose who was purchased as a yearling heifer last year.  She was sired by Claynook Dealmaker and will complete the eleventh generation of Excellent or Very Goods going back to the World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion Lavender Ruby Redrose.  The winning bid of 2,800gns for Rose was placed online by the Robinson’s from Northumberland.

Robert Steel owner of the Kepculloch Holstein herd sold four heifers to average £2244 and topped with a Secretariat daughter bred from a Doorman dam who sold for 2,450gns to the Taylor family from near Lockerbie.

Skirwith Hall Farms sold eight very impressive cows and heifers to average £2257 and topped the overall cow trade, selling Stowbeck Dealmaker Mavis from 2,350gns to Alistair Marshall from Hardgrove Farms, Dumfries.  She was sired by Claynook Dealmaker and bred from a Very Good 88 Mincio dam with yields over 14000kgs.

The Annandale herd sold two bulls both selling for 3,000gns.  The first was for Annandale Longstaff who was sired by the 8,000gns Annandale Kraft who sold in the Annandale Dispersal earlier this year.  Longstaff was bred from the Comestar Laurie Sheik family with his dam producing over 13000kgs at 5.25% butterfat.  The second was for Annandale Kaden who was sired by DG Calando from the Kim cow family that originated from the Brynhyfryd herd.
