Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Monday 20th December, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A smaller show of only 47 prime bulls forward whereby a better trade was received on the week. Topping at £2096.57 was a Limousin from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick and Messrs Nicholson, The Lake sold another to £2003.67 both purchased by Bowland Foods, Carlisle. Charolais from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold to £1878.74 purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale. A British Blue out of a Holstein cow sold to £1590 from Messrs Henderson, Park House, Welton and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

Top overall and a season top so far of 287.5p was achieved by DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton for a Limousin cross and purchased by J & E Medcalf, Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax. More could have been sold. Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1223.01 for a Norwegian Red cross from Messrs Little, Kirkbride House, Wigton and a top pence per kilo of 193.5p for an MRI from Messrs Crozier, Cowlyers, Silloth.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of only 35 prime steers forward on Christmas week whereby all classes would be slightly easier on the week. Achieving a days top of £1882.33 was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. British Blue crosses from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold to £1876.25 and Charolais crosses to £1726.79 from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie. Top pence per kilo of 257.5p was paid to Messrs Nicholson, The Lake for another British Blue cross. Heifers were seen to sell to £1814.95 for Charolais crosses from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries and £1732.50 for another both purchased by Pioneer Foods. Limousin crosses from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold to £1614.53 and purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir. British Blue crosses from DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton peaked at £1602.87 and the days overall top pence per kilo of 264.5p

CAST COWS: A smaller show of 305 cast cows, bulls and prime cattle was on offer

A good entry of 234 cast cows, bulls and out of spec cattle were offered to a smaller ring side of buyers

M/s Wood, Waters Farm, Shap sold the top price Charolais cow for 913kg, 153.5p/kg, £1401 to C Kirkpatrick

M/s Brown & Co, Mosshead Farm sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 798kg, 174.5p/kg, £1392 also to C Kirkpatrick

Mr Mark Batty, Flimby Hall, Maryport sold a Limousin cow for 817kg, 164.5p/kg, £1343 to M/s Roberts

Mr Harry Emslie sold a Blue x Heifer for 565kg, 199.5p/kg, £1127 to Sean Mcgimpsey

A great entry of 150 dairy cast cows was on offer to a keen ring side of buyers ensure all classes were in great demand.

M/s Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm sold the top price Holstein x cow for 1028kg, 129.5p/kg, £1331 to Les Fell

M/s Cannon, Espland Hill sold the top priced Holstein x heifer fir 712kg, 184.5p/kg, £1313 also to Les Fell and 977kg, 186.5p/kg, £1262 to Brian Capper

M/s Graves & son, Home Farm sold the top priced Mont x heifer for 685kg, 161.5p/kg, £1106 to Brian Capper who also bought the top priced for Friesian cow was sold for 753kg, 139.5p/kg, £1050 form M/s Mattocks, Aulby Farm

CAST BULLS: An entry of 9 Stock Bulls were on offer, with M/s Houldey Kirtleton House sold the top priced Simmental stock bull for 1344kg, 109.5p/kg, £1470 to C Kirkpatrick. Kirkmill Farms sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1066kg, 123.5p/kg, £1316 to Jewitts, M/s Pinguey Hill House sold the top priced Limousin stock bull for965kg, 132.5p/kg, £1278 to C Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep saw an increased entry of 2624 head forward. Another great result this week seeing an overall average of 282ppk being well ahead of pre sale forecasts and other outlets. This translates to an average of £126.54 a head with plainer show forward.

Leading the sale per head at £180 was a cracking pen of 4 Dutch Texel lambs weighing 45kg from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House which sold to Mr R Skelton. Best export types continue to fly here at Borderway seeing a top of 431.6ppk for Beltex lambs from Messrs Musgrave , Cardew Hall, Dalston.

CAST EWES & RAMS: The weekly sale had an entry of 170 cast ewes and rams. Trade continues to rise bring sharper on the week. Topping today’s sale at £180 was Messrs Sutherland, Bogrie for a strong Texel ewe. Suffolks topped at £152 from IBC McManus, Low House. Mules topped on two occasion at £118 firstly from Messrs Morton, Church Farm and then for a pen of 12 from Messrs Beaty, Stonewalls. Cheviot ewes topped at £118 from Messrs Chalmers, Outer Woodhead. The cast ewe and ram sale will run as normal next week with ewes required to fill orders.
