Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 3rd January , Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A great entry of 76 prime bulls forward with a fantastic trade throughout a predominantly dairy bred show.  Topping the sale at £1998.20 was a Limousin shown by Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie and £1977.55 from Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Simmental crosses sold to £1580.87 from DG Farming, Dinwoodie Green, Lockerbie purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  An over 30 month Aberdeen Angus from Messrs Currie, Skewbridge, Dumfries sold to £1490.93 purchased by Brookwood Abattoir, Halifax.  Top overall pence per kilo of 278.5p was paid to DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton for one of their Limousin crosses; this was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.

Dairy bred bulls sold to £1412.07 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Carlisle and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor, this was also joint top pence per kilo of 194.5p along with a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Walker, Barwinnock, Newton Stewart which was purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.

PRIME CATTLE: A good show of 36 prime steers and heifers forward to kick start the new year with a buoyant trade throughout.  Topping the sale at £1890.70 for a Limousin cross steer was Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle; the same vendors also sold top price pence per kilo of 255.5p.

Heifers seen a days top of £1798.74 for Charolais crosses from Messrs Neill,Upper Tinwald, Dumfries and £1754.91 from Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle for a Limousin cross both purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Messrs Wilsons heifer was also top pence per kilo of 263.5p.

CAST COWS: A small entry of 174 cast cows, bulls and out of spec cattle was on offer on Monday with beef cows being sharper than the last few weeks.

Messrs Jarman, Brow Top sold the top priced Limousin x cow for 886kg, 187.5p, £1661 to Charles Kirkpatrick and from the same home a British Blue x cow sold for 660kg, 227.5p, £1501 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Pearsbyhall Farming sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 660kg, 218.5p, £1442 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Messrs Thompson, How Burn sold a Limousin x cow for 752kg, 180.5p, £1357 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.

A plain show of dairy cast cows was on offer with trade being less than the last few weeks.

Messrs Mattinson & Sons, Rosewain sold an Ayrshire heifer for 744kg, 169.5p, £1261 to Alan Jarvis; Messrs Brown, Lane End sold a Holstein x heifer for 727kg, 171.5p, £1246 to Brian Capper; Messrs Wilson, Evening Hill sold a Holstein x heifer for 660kg, 158.5p, £1046 to Alan Jarvis; Messrs Robinson, Burtholme sold a Holstein x cow for 750kg, 136.5p, £1023 to Les Fell.

CAST BULLS: 7 Stock Bulls and out of spec cows were offered on Monday, Messrs Retson & Wright, Oaklands sold a Limousin stock bull for 1069kg, 131.5p, £1405 to Charles Kirkpatrick, Messrs Wales, Thackwood sold a Limousin stock bull for 976kh, 143.5p, £1400 to Jewitt Meats and Messrs MaGarva, Horse Close sold two over 30 month old Ayrshire bullocks for 599kg, 187.5p, £1123 and 688kg, 185.5p, £1276 both to Les Fell.

PRIME SHEEP:

The hogg season continued where the lamb season left off seeing an overall average of 282p, SQQ 292p being achieved, this being a couple of pence back on last week with a somewhat plainer offering, if anything heavier hoggs proved harder to cash on the week.

Messrs Hodgson, Woodend Farm, Egremont led the trade this week selling Beltex hoggs to a top of £172, James also sold two further lots at 412.5ppk and 400ppk to lead the price per kilo section also.

Heavy hoggs sold to £170 for Suffolk for Messrs Irving, East Cliffe, Longtown.

Mules sold to £140 for heavies from Messrs BD & MS  Hope, Albierigg, Canonbie and to 266p from TP Wigham, Hargill House, Haltwhistle.  Hill hoggs to £131 for Blackies from Messrs BD & MS Hope, Albierigg and to 285p again for Blackies from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown

CAST EWES & RAMS: On Monday the 3rd of January, H&H held their weekly sale of cast sheep with trade being sharper on the week topping at £178 for two Texel ewes from M/s Hudson, Rigg House.  Strong ewes would be £10 up on the week.  Mules to £116 from M/s Pitchford, Great Easby and Swales to £78 from M/s Smith-Jackson, High Town.  Tups also saw a good jump in price with far greater demand round the ring selling to £160 for two Leicester from M/s Wigham, Hargill House.
