On Wednesday 12th January Harrison & Hetherington had 1412 cattle forward at their weekly sale comprising of 513 Store Cattle, 414 store bulls and weanlings, and 482 calves

STORE CATTLE – Over 600 store cattle forward at the Annual January Show and sale whereby an absolutely outstanding trade was witnessed from start to finish on the day.

The pre Show sale was kindly judged by the James Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont with a fantastic show of steers in front of him.  He duly awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes to the Priestley family of Cracrop Farm and a first prize heifer to Messrs Murray of Roughet Hill, Brampton.  Taking the overall Champion was the first prize steer from the Priestleys which later sold to £1570  and was purchased by the Judge.  Reserve overall honours went to the second prize steer which later sold to £1580 and was purchased by Hargreaves Farms.  The firm of Harrison and Hetherington would like to thank Mr Crichton, the vendors and buyers on the day for their attendance proving the day to be a resounding success.

Heifers:  1st Messrs Murray, Roughet Hill, Brampton                    £1280

Top overall consignment average came from Messrs Slack, Newby Farm selling seven quality Limousin cross steers and heifers to average a staggering £1545.  Top overall single animal was an outstanding Limousin cross heifer from Wigton farmers Messrs Bewley, Mid Farm, selling to a day’s top of £1900 and purchased by Foley Brothers, Newcastle.  Next best heifer was another Limousin cross and this time sold by Messrs Little, The Guards, Carlisle receiving £1690.  Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold their best Charolais cross for £1470 and Messrs Fishwick, Thornship Farm, Penrith sold top Aberdeen Angus cross to £1450.  The steers all qualities were exceptionally easily sold also to a day’s top of £1800 for two Limousin x steers from Messrs Wigham, Cold Shields, Haltwhistle.  Beef Shorthorns crosses to £1730 from Messrs Robinson, Gelt Hall, Brampton.  British Blue to topped at £1590 from Messrs Priestley, Cracrop for a run of 5 steers and Hereford crosses from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm to £1445.

Black and whites were tremendous to sell seeing a day’s overall top of £1300 for a Friesian from Messrs Moscrop, Rye Close, Carlisle.

WEANED CATTLE: A staggering start to the New Year as a large entry of both bulls and weanlings were met with extreme interest resulting in an almighty trade.  Limousin bullocks sold to £1100 from JR & V Edmondson, Manesty.  Aberdeen bullocks sold to £885 from Messrs Kirkby, Ashley Grove.  Norwegian Reds and Friesians bullocks sold to £730 from FDT Farms.  Charolais bullocks sold to £895 from Messrs Barker, Noran Bank Farm.  Heifers also a serious trade with Limousins up to £1130 from Messrs Routledge & Partners and £1040 from Messrs Martin, Hesleywell.  Bulls a tremendous trade topping of £1370 for a Simmental from Messrs Tallentire, High Griseburn.
