On Monday 17th January, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: Once again another good entry of 90 Prime bulls forward with trade every bit as dear as ever.  Less weight on offer throughout the sale only saw one bull over £2000 this week with Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan selling a Charolais to £2067.32 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Limousins peaked at £1956.11 for a 734kg from Messrs Gass, Nunscleugh, this was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  D A Harrison, Hill house, Wigton run of bulls sold to a top of £1929.74, £1897.39 and £1872.50 all purchased by Ralph Pearson.  Top overall pence per kilo of 274.5p was achieved twice for Limousin crosses and on both occasions, vendor was D A Harrison, Hill House Wigton.  Dairy bred bulls to £1313.60 for a Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Holsteins Friesians to £1313.40 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Montbeliardes to £1657.48 from Messrs Workman, Beeches, Carlisle purchased by A & D Meats.  Top overall pence per kilo of 216.5p was paid to Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield, Carlisle for one of their Fleckviehs which was purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir, Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another fantastic entry of 67 Prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly sale whereby a flying trade was seen throughout the sale for all qualities.  Topping the sale was Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton for a Limousin cross steer.  This steer weighed 798kgs and equated to £1919.19 and was purchased by Eric Hall, others to £1852.38 for a 725kg and purchased by Robert Medcalf, Brockwood Abattoir, Halifax.  Charolais crosses to £1866.73 again from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, British Blues to £1803.18 from Messrs Hewson, Burgh Head, Carlisle and purchased by Eric Hall.  Aberdeen Angus crosses from Messrs Smithson, Bloan, Kirkby Stephen to £1739.00.  Top overall pence per kilo of 263p was paid to Messrs R Miller, Arkleby Hall, Wigton from their Limousin cross and purchased by W E Fairlie, Letham, others to 260.5p from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods.

Heifers saw a top of £1756.48 for a 704kg Limousin cross from Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  £1741.99 for another from Messrs Dixon, Low Whinnow, Carlisle and Charolais to £1741.17 from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries and again purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Top overall pence per kilo of 270.5p was paid to Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle with one of their 623kgs Limousin crosses and was purchased by Mathers of Kelso.  Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle to 268.5p and 262.5p while Messrs Hewitson, Lords Close, Maryport sold their best to 265.5p all purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.

CAST COWS: Up she goes, 408 cast cows and stock bulls were on offer to a very keen ringside of buyers which ensured all classes were well above vendors expectations.

Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop sold an outstanding Blonde cow for 965kg, 167.5p, £1616 to Charles Kirkpatrick; Messrs Teasdale, Grindon Hill, Haydon Bridge run of outstanding Limousin cross cows topped at 726kg, 219.5p, £1593 and 862kg, 175.5p, £1512 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Messrs Vance, Bridgehouse Farm, Newton Stewart run of cows topped at 820kg, 187.5p, £1537 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Thrimby Farms, Penrith cows topped at 604kg, 227.5p, £1374 for a 56 month Limousin cross cow to Jewitt Meats; Messrs Watson, Sanders Close sold a 34 month old Limousin heifer for 650kg, 225.5p, £1465 to Charles Kirkpatrick; Messrs Storey, Tinnishall sold a Limousin cross heifer for 670kg, 209.5p, £1403 to Brain Capper and Messrs Bell, High Dyke sold a Limousin cross heifer for 676kg, 208.5p, £1409 to Alan Jarvis.  Messrs Oliver, Whitehouse sold a Charolais heifer for 514kg, 207.5p, £1066 to Sean McGimpsey; Messrs Borthwick & Sons, Drumshangan sold a Hereford heifer for 574kg, 203.5p, £1168 to Rob Medcalf.

A large show of 225 dairy cast cows was on offer with trade averaging an amazing 118.9p, being up 1.5p on the week.  Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield sold a 108 month old Holstein cross cow for 912kg, 162.5p, £1482 to Charles Kirkpatrick; Messrs Mandale & Son, Lambfield Farm sold the top priced Danish Red heifer for 624kg, 217.5p, £1357 to Brian Capper and a 91 month old Danish Red cow sold for 854kg, 141.5p, £1208 to Les Fell.  Messrs Nixon, Ribton House Holstein cross cows topped at 934kg, 140.5p, £1312 and 868kg, 140.5p, £1219 both bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Evening Hill Farm Holstein cross cows topped at 945kg, 131.5p, £1242 also to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Dart & Sons, Flothers, Slaley sold the top priced Montbeliarde cross cow for 908kg, 134.5p, £1221 to Charles Kirkpatrick; Blencogo House Farm sold the top priced Holstein cross heifer which sold for 644kg, 182.5p, £1175 to Les Fell; Mess Thompson, Low Rigg sold a Holstein cross heifer for 579kg, 180.5p, £1045 also to Les Fell and Messrs Harrington, Mounsey Bank sold the top priced Friesian heifer which sold for 570kg, 179.5p, £1023 to Sean McGimpsey.

CAST BULLS: Only 8 stock bulls and out of spec bullocks was on offer on Monday.  Messrs Graham, Cargo Farm sold a 37 month old British Blue bullock for 806kg, 164.5p, £1325 to Messrs Roberts and Messrs Miller, Allerby Hall sold a Limousin stock bull for 957kg, 135.5p, £1296 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: As predicted lambs were less on the week however an overall average of 266p, SQQ 272p didn’t tell the whole story, export weight sheep still often saw 290p with 300p plus easily achieved for smaller sorts.  The real hit has come in the heavier weight bracket with demand certainly easing here, a sale average per head of £117.74 still shows a £5.49 per head increase on the year.  Two vendors shared the top price of £156 for heavy hoggs being a single Suffolk from Messrs D Charnock, Millholme, Roweltown and Texels from G J Toppin, Bascodyke, Armathwaite.   Beltex hoggs from A & A Little, Hollands, Penton lead the price per kilo at 375p closely chased by Messrs Murray, The Throp, Gilsland at 370p.

CAST EWES & RAMS: On Monday 17th January Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of 195 cast ewes and rams, once again a great trade was had for all classes of sheep.  Topping todays sale at £166 for a Texel ewe was Thrimby Hall Farms; the same home had a great run of Swale ewes and topping at £78 for a pen of 21 with another pen of 26 at £74.  Horned ewes would be far dearer on the week with increased demand for leaner carcassed ewes with an influx of fat ewes on the market.  Cast rams also sold very well up to £146 for a Blue Du Maine from Messrs Millar, Woodhousehill.
