On Monday 24th January, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock. A smaller show of 435 Cast cows, Bulls and Prime cattle were on offer.

PRIME BULLS: A slightly smaller entry of 77 prime bulls were forward, seeing the best quality cattle selling dearer and the lesser end ever so slightly easier on the week. The sale saw six bulls over £2000 and sixteen achieving over £1800 to a day’s top of £2389 for a 928kg Limousin for Local Vendor’s Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie, purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Illingworth, Howgillside, Lockerbie sold second best to £2229.94 and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold bulls to £2106.84 to Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor, Penrith sold a fantastic run of 9 pure bred Limousins to a top of £2047.40 with the whole run to average a whopping 267.5ppk or £1861.42 for 696kgs. The top overall pence per kilo came from the same home peaking at 275.5ppk being purchased by Morgan Helliwell.

Dairy bred bulls were very good to sell for all well fleshed types with a top overall of £1295.19 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle purchased by Bowland Foods. Top price per kilo of 207.5ppk was paid to Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton with one of their Friesians.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller show of 54 Prime steers and heifers forward with the best types dearer on the week and lesser qualities less on the week.  Top overall was an outstanding Limousin cross steer from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth which levelled out at £1899.95.  Others to £1828 from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and £1802 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle all of the above purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top British Blue cross was a 710kg steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo steer was 267.5 from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse for a 674kg Limousin cross.  Heifers peaked at £1830.27 for a 722kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, and £1796 for a British Blue cross.  Top overall was a 612 kg Limousin cross from Messrs Brough, Old Rectory, Carlisle peaking at 271.5 and purchased by Alan Jarvis on behalf of a butcher.

CAST COWS: A smaller entry of 308 Cast cows, bulls and out of spec cattle were on offer to an increased ring side of 24 buyers ensuring a sharper trade.  Messrs Crozier, Raggetsyke sold a Limousin x heifer for 776kg, 222.5p £1726 bought by Jewitts.  Messrs Gatherer, Barnsford run of cows topped at 958kg 165.5p £1585 for a Charolais x bought by Michael Helliwell.  Mr Andrew Kirkbride, Flimby Hall Farm, sold two over 30 month Limousin heifers for 588kg 259.5p £1525 and 648kg, 241.5p £1564 purchased by Ross Greenwood and James Mather.  Messrs Bell, Winterhope Farm, run of cows topped at 865kg, 174.5p £1509 for a Main Anjou to Owain Llyr and a Limousin x heifer from the same home sold for 547kg 237.5p £1299 to James Mather.  Messrs Robley, Demesne Farm, sold the top priced Aberdeen Angus cow for 874kg, 157.5p £1376 to Sean McGimpsey.

All classes of Dairy cows would be 10p up on the week.  Messrs Teasdale & Son, Halefield Farm, sold a Friesian cow for 868kg, 154.5p £1341 to Charles Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Dart & Son, Flothers sold a Montbelairde x heifer for 644kg, 195.5p £1259 to Les Fell.  Bromfield Farms sold a Holstein x heifer for 697kg 180.5p £1258 also to Les Fell. CAST EWES & RAMS: Cast sheep trade continues to rise with horned sheep taking another lift on the week.  Swaledale topped at £94 for two from Messrs Wilson, Gate Farm.  Topping today’s sale at £156 for a Texel ewe from Messrs Brough, The Croft.  Big framed ewes regular in excess of £150.  Suffolk x mules ewes topped at £137 for a pen of 6 from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow.  Zwartbles ewes topped at £142 and Mules to £114 for 8 from Messrs Morton, Church Farm.
