Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Kirkby Stephen, Faraday Road, Kirkby Stephen, CA17 4QL

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 3,717 sheep were forward consisting of 3,128 prime hoggs and 589 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £178.50 were a pen of five 44kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan.

Topping at 431.3p were a pen of three 40kg Beltex cross hoggs which made £172.50 and were consigned by Jojo Andrews, Boscar Flats, York.

S Millman, Brackenslack, Penrith sold 42kg hoggs to make £170.

Messrs Lawson, Pasture House Farm, Wigton sold a pen of three 38kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £161.50 (425p/kg)

Jojo Andrews also sold a pen of 40kg hoggs to make £167.50 (418.8pkg), with 62kg Suffolk cross hoggs selling to £170 also from this home.

Messrs Dent, Elm House, Bolton sold a pen of five 39kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £161.50 (414.1p/kg)

Another flying trade was witnessed here at Kirkby Stephen for all classes and Kirkby Stephen bucked the national trend once again with an SQQ average of 294.5p/kg and an overall sale average of 284.2p/kg and £123.62 for 3128 hoggs which included over 900 horned and mule hoggs.

Our annual horned hogg prize show was held which was kindly sponsored by Aldersons Garage Nateby and the Swaledale Sheep Breeders Association.

Local hill sheep enthusiast Mr A Slack, Stoneriggs carried out the judging and awarded the Overall Champion to the first placed pen of ten Blackfaced hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm, Longtown which weighed 46kg and sold for £125 (271.7p/kg)

Taking the reserve overall champion was the first placed pen of ten Swaledale hoggs from Messrs Clarke, Howgill Castle, Penrith which weighed 46kg and sold for £115.

Cast sheep topped at £182.50 for Texel cross ewes from Messrs Dixon, Hartley Castle.

Rough fell ewes topped at £112.50 from Messrs Beck, Tebay.

All classes of cast sheep are in strong demand week on week with trade being wonderful at the moment!
