On Wednesday 26th January Harrison & Hetherington had 1200 cattle forward at their weekly sale comprising of 412 Store Cattle, 176 store bulls and weanlings, 371 calves and 241 Dairy cattle in the dispersal sale of the Irthingend Herd on behalf of G & J Brown, Lane End Farm, Irthington, Carlisle.
STORE CATTLE – A good show of 412 Store cattle forward at the weeky sale whereby the very biggest and best fleshed cattle would see an easing on the week whilst everything else would see trade dearer on the week.
Topping the days trading at £1680 was a pair of Limousin cross steers from Messrs Wigham, Cold Shields, Haltwhistle with other from Messrs Donaldson, East Park, Carlisle selling to £1470 (x2). Messrs Mason Bank Farm, Penrith saw their day sales peaked at £1450 for a British Blue cross steer. Simmental and Beef Shorthorns crosses from Messrs Batey High Knells, Carlisle peaked at £1440 and £1410 while Aberdeen Angus cross saw a top of £1405 from Messrs Palmer, Longrigg Thorn, Carlisle.
Heifers sold to a day’s top of £1490, £1480 and £1410 from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth for British Blues, Aberdeen Angus and Limousin crosses. More cattle required to fulfil demand on a weekly basis.

WEANED CATTLE: A smaller show of weaned cattle and stirks were forward with all cattle slightly sharper on the week seeing all vendors leaving highly delighted. Top price of the day was paid for three Charolais bulls from Messrs Green, The Craggs, Melrose topping the sale at £1260.
All breeds and sizes of bullocks and heifers were very well bid for with a tremendous Limousin bullock aged 8 months selling for £1200 from Messrs Knox, Cragside, Kelso. Many other 8-10 month old Continental bred bullocks sold for £1080 plus regularly away. Smaller suckled type calves were also very well bid for selling for £700 plus. A strong ring side of buyers with many leaving empty handed. More cattle are required on a weekly basis.
