Borderway Primestock Sale

On Monday 31st January, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: Another good entry of 88 Prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale.  Bulls would once again see a flying trade throughout for all qualities.  Top overall was a Pure Bred Limousin from Messrs Goldie, Townfoot Farm, Dumfries selling their 934kgs to £2320.99 and purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.   Messrs Goldies run of 3 bulls averaged a healthy £2167.10.  Messrs Goldie, of South Bowerhouses Farm, Dumfries sold top priced Charolais to £2038.15.  Luing bulls to £1896.40 from Messrs Crerar, New Mains, Dunbar and purchased by A & D Meats, Rossendale.  Top overall pence per kilo of 277.5p was received by Messrs Moffat, Stonehouse, Gretna for a 650 kg Limousin cross and was purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Messrs Pearson, High Plaskett Lands, Maryport sold their best to 275.5p and was again purchased by Ralph Pearson.  Black and white bulls were also marvellous to sell with a day’s top of £1430.63 and £1406.21 for a Holstein from Messrs Murray & Son, Conheath Farm, Dumfries purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick and Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor. Top pence per kilo of 206.5p for a Friesian from Messrs Bland, The Flatt, Brampton purchased by Jewitt Meats.

PRIME CATTLE: A marvellous show of 76 Prime steers and heifers forward resulting in a fantastic trade throughout the sale.  Achieving the days top of £1966.48 was a fantastic 752kg British Blue cross from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall, Wigton and purchased by weekly buyers Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, the same good vendors also sold top priced Limousin cross to £1874.95.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle sold another to £1868.65 and Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton to £1821.51.  Charolais crosses from Messrs Spence, Roberthill Farm, Lockerbie to £1737.32 and purchased by Eric Hall.  Top overall steer pence per kilo was the aforementioned from Messrs Dixon, Lesson Hall peaking at 261.50.

Heifers sold to a day’s top of £1833.83 for a Charolais cross from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries and purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold another to £1804.82 while Messrs Smith, North Boig, Cumnock, Ayrshire sold the top Limousin cross to £1789.07 for 747kg.  Messrs Pearson, High Plaskett Lands, Maryport sold a 703kg crossbred to £1725.87 and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Top overall pence per kilo of 270.50 was paid to Messrs Slack, Plumtree House, Penrith for a 617kg Limousin cross and was purchased by R & JP Mulholland, Butchers Shop, Great Orton, Carlisle.  Others to 269.50p for another 602kg Limousin cross from Messrs Airey, The Close, Wigton and was purchased by Steven Wilson, Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Messrs Wilson also purchased the top pence per kilo Charolais cross at 262.50 from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries.

CAST COWS:  A great entry of 329 cast cows were on offer to a very keen ringside of buyers which once again ensured that vendors left highly delighted. Messrs Maudlsey, Littlebank, Settle sold two outstanding British Blue cows for 914kg, 224.5ppk or £2051 and to 811kg, 236.5ppk or £1918 purchased by Mr Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm sold a British Blue cross cow for 768kg, 227.5ppk or £1747 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Callion, Bolfornought Farm sold the top priced Limousin cow for 885kg, 194.5ppk or £1721 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Herdman & Son, Ovington Farm run of cows topped at 803kg, 207.5ppk or £1666 and to 718kg, 229.5ppk or £1647 and to 758kg, 216.5ppk or £1641 and  finally 784kg, 207.5ppk or £1626 all to Owain Llyr.

Messrs Darling & Sons, Stichilll Home Farm, Kelso sold a Limousin cross cow for 798kg, 1995.5ppk or £1580 and to 866kg, 182.5ppk or £1580 both to Mr Kirkpatrick.  Messrs Callion, Bolfornough Farm sold a Limosuin cow for 957kg, 164.5ppk or £1574 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Bradley & son, Marina House sold a Parthanaise cross cow to 700kg, 222.5ppk or £1557 and to 677kg, 221.5ppk or £1499 to Jewitts. Messrs Goddard, Frankstown Farm sold an Aberdeen Angus heifer for 217.5ppk and Maine Anjou heifers for 215.5ppk both to Jewitts. PRIME SHEEP: At the weekly sale 1637 Prime sheep were forward.  A show lacking quality at the top end saw all classes dearer on the week with an overall average of 272p SQQ 280p with heavy lambs in particular seeing a sharp upturn in trade.  Leading the trade at £170 was a cracking Beltex hogg shown by M L Fell, Harley Croft, Wigton which was purchased by Mr R Skelton.  A G Dempster, Castle Hill, Lockerbie brought another smart run of lambs down to lead the price per kilo selling Beltex lambs at 405.1 to Mr A Dawson.,  Jon Fell Jnr, Stanger Hill, Wigton lead the Mule prices with a pen of heavies selling at £135 leading price per kilo for mules was 261p from T & AT Bowman, Brampton Fell.  Suffolk lambs sold to £144 from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown and to 276.9p from the same home.  Blackies sold to £124 for 45kgs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown with another pen from this home selling at 279.8ppk.

CAST EWES & RAMS: At the weekly sale of cast sheep a mixed show was forward with well fleshed ewes continuing to sell to great rates.  Leaner ewes proved harder to cash on the week.  Topping today’s sale at £150 for a Texel tup from Messrs Park, Cowranside.  Ewes topped at £148 for two from Messrs Brough, The Croft and another from Messrs Bowe, Wiggonby.  Swales topped at £70 from Messrs Morton, Church Farm.  All classes of ewes continue to sell very well weekly for further information please get in touch.
