On Monday 7th February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: An outstanding entry of 112 prime bulls forward at Borderway seeing trade out do all other outlets with 16 bulls selling at over £1800 and 7 selling at over £2000.  The day’s top of £2347.20 was for a 960kg Limousin from Messrs Thompson, Townfoot, Penrith. Others sold to £2209.55 for an 826kg bull from the same home and Messrs Wilson, Bankdale, Carlisle sold their best to £2121.28 with the first bulls both selling to Bowland Foods, Preston and the last to Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers. British Blue crosses sold to a day’s best of £1894 from an outstanding run of 7 bulls for local farmers Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall, Carlisle seeing an average of £1756 for all 7. Charolais topped at £1853 for 777kgs from Messrs Barclay, South Road, Aberdeen and was purchased by A & D Meats. Aberdeen Angus crosses sold to £1503 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Longtown and purchased by Bowland Foods. Top overall pence per kilo of 280.5p was paid to Messrs Hall, Ainstable Hall for their 670kgs Limousin cross. Messrs Hall’s run of 7 averaged 269.5ppk. Messrs Barclay, South Road’s best was 274.5p, both of the aforementioned purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.

Black and white bulls peaked at £1439.54 from South Lambhill, Longtown and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and a top pence per kilo of 216.5p was paid to Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle for a Fleckvieh and 215.5p for a Friesian again of South Lambhill, Longtown.

PRIME CATTLE: Once again another fantastic entry of 65 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderway’s weekly sale of primestock seeing heifers dearer and steers achieving the same good trade as last week. Topping the sale overall was an outstanding 762kg Limousin cross steer from weekly vendors Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Carlisle achieving £1916 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle who also secured the top priced British Blue cross from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle which weighed in at 742kgs. A Blonde cross from Messrs Lawson, Hundith House, Wigton peaked at £1752 and was purchased by Eric Hall who also bought the Hereford cross from Messrs Hewitson, Shatton Lodge, Cockermouth at £1608. Top pence per kilo steer at 255.5p came from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and purchased by Pioneer Foods. This was closely followed by another Limousin cross from Messrs Story, Newbiggin, Carlisle and purchased by James Chapman Butchers, Wishaw. 

Heifers were forward in fantastic fleshing and quality and saw a day’s top of £1788 for a 766kg Limousin from Aileen Ritchie, Tamala Burnside, Aberdeen. This superb heifer was purchased by local butchers Steven Wilson, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle closely followed this at £1766 for 646kga and was again purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers. Charolais crosses from Messrs Neill, Upper Tinwald, Dumfries sold to £1728 purchased by Pioneer Foods. The top overall pence per kilo on the day was 273.5p for a Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm purchased by S Wilson Butchers. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth had another fantastic run of 5 which saw a top of 263.5p and was purchased by A & D Meats.

CAST COWS:  Once again a great entry of 339 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to an increased ring side of buyers which resulted in an overall average of 144.6p. An entry of 132 beef cows and stock bulls averaged an amazing 163.7p which was up 10.9p on the week. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains, Lanark sold the top priced British Blue cow for 1037kg at 221.5p totalling £2296 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Brian Hall, Ainstable Hall topped the Limousin cows with 785kg at 216.5p totalling £1699 and 738kg at 208.5p totalling £1538 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Lawson, Moss Side sold the top priced Charolais cow for 971kg at 172.5p totalling £1674 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Stevenson & Sons, Lower Langshaw Farm’s run of outstanding Limousin x cows sold for 757kg at 217.5p totalling £1646, 749kg at 211.5p totalling £1584, 792kg at 199.5p totalling £1580 and 699kg at 225.5p totalling £1576 bought by Les Fell, Owain Llyr(x2) and Alan Jarvis. A great entry of 207 dairy cast cows was on offer with an average of 132.4p which was up 14.9p. Seymour Farms sold the top priced Holstein x cow for 871kg at 153.5p totalling £1336 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Dockeray, Kelsick House sold a Holstein x cow for 897kg at 144.5p totalling £1296 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Graves, Old Town Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 913kg at 139.5p totalling £1273 to Pickstocks. Messrs Morley, Hadderdale sold a Holstein x cow for 692kg at 183.5p totalling £1269 and 666kg at 185.5p totalling £1235 to Les Fell and Thomas Ball. Messrs Nixon, Ribton House sold a Holstein x stock bull for 1324kg at 124.5p totalling £1648 to Charles Kirkpatrick.

PRIME SHEEP: A smaller number of Prime sheep were forward at Borderway with an entry of 1386.  A mixed entry with good meaty types in very good demand.  Leading the trade was a cracking Texel hogg shown by Neil Millar, Woodhousehill, Kirkpatrick Fleming selling for £182 purchased by Mr R Skelton.  Messrs Scott, Thirlwall Castle sold another tremendous run of hoggs and sold a pen of 5 Dutch Texel for £4.00 per kilo purchased by Mr A Dawson.
