Kirkby Stephen Prize Show & Sale of Store Cattle

Harrison & Hetherington held their February Prize Show and Sale of Store cattle when a catalogued entry of 584 head were on offer.

Topping the sale at £1940 was the overall reserve champion a 11 month old British Blue cross steer from Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick which was bought by Messrs Barnett, Brinns Farm, Shap.

Mr M Swann, York kindly carried out the judging who saw an outstanding show of cattle put in front of him, and awarded the overall championship to a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Whitaker, Bowsber, Clapham which sold for £1900 to Messrs Bradley, Penny Grange, Settle.

Also selling for £1900 was a 11 month old Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm which sold to Messrs Barnett, Brinns Farm.

British Blue cross heifers sold to £1720 from Messrs Whitaker, Bowsber selling to Messrs Mellin, Long Preston. Limousin heifers sold to £1700 also from Messrs Whitaker and selling to Messrs Fawcett, Fold House Farm, Skipton.

British Blue cross steers sold for £1685 from Messrs Grisedale, Greenmount Farm, Crooklands which was bought by D. Barker.

Trade was flying for all classes of Store Cattle here at Kirkby Stephen once again with over 50 active buyers being in attendance from West Lothian to Northants.

Steers averaged £1162.19.

Heifers averaged £1118.56

With an overall sale average of £1144.40 being achieved for predominantly 10-12 month old cattle, and 51 more sold on the year.

Messrs Whitaker, Bowsber sold their run of 8 heifers to average £1673.33.

Messrs Huck, Sowerthwaite Farm, Austwick sold their consignment of 25, 9-11month old steers and heifers to average £1346.
