On Monday 14^th February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: Another good show of 82 Prime bulls forward with all classes every bit as good to sell on the week if not better.  Sixteen bulls sold over £1800 and six over £2000 up to £2158.18 for an 865kg Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Reddings Farm, Moffat purchased by Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie.  Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Lockerbie sold an 884kg purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Charolais peaked at £2026.10 from Messrs Goldie, South Bower Houses, Dumfries purchased by A & D Meats.  Simmentals to £1721.28 from Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House, Lockerbie and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Top overall pence per kilo of 281.5 and 278.5 was paid to DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton for two exceptional Limousin crosses both of which were purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Charolais crosses to 265.5 from Messrs Watret, Maulscastle, Annan.  Dairy bred bulls peaked at £1645 for a Friesian from Messrs Hewitson, Kings Hill, Brampton and purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Top price per kilo was a Fleckvieh from Messrs Mitchinson, Beck House, Carlisle attaining 234.5 and was purchased by Bowland Foods while Friesians peaked at 216.5 from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, Penrith.  Many more are required on a weekly basis.

PRIME CATTLE: One of the largest shows since Christmas of prime steers and heifers with 87 forward and trade remaining strong throughout for all types. Topping the sale overall was a 727kg Limousin cross steer from Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle achieving £1835 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Others sold to £1813 for another from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton and £1804 from Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle. This steer was also top pence per kilo at 256.5p.

Heifers peaked at £1808 for a 749kgs Limousin cross from Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs DA Harrison, Hill House, Wigton sold top priced Charolais cross at 743kg peaking at £1786. Top price overall pence per kilo of 273.5p was paid to Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle for 596kg purchased by Chapman Butchers, Wishaw. Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton sold a 572kg Limousin cross to 270.5p and was purchased by Steven Wilson Butchers Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.

Black and white steers sold to 195.5p for 648kg equating to £1266.

CAST COWS:  A larger entry of 366 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer to the usual ring side of buyers which ensured a flying trade. Less beef cows about with only 122 today, however, quality was in demand. Messrs Watret, Maulscastle sold the top priced Limousin at 1041kg at 233.5p totalling £2430 to Owain Llyr and a British Blue cow from the same home sold for 900kg at 244.5p totalling £2200 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Gerrard, Mores Farm, Northwich sold an outstanding British Blue cow for 905kg at 245.5p totalling £2221 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Knight, Stephney Farm sold two outstanding Limousin cows for 846kg at 227.5p totalling £1924 and 728kg at 230.5p totalling £1678 both purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Studholme & Son, Nealhouse Farm sold a Limousin x heifer for 730kg at 227.5p totalling £1660 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Stamper & Son, Rose Farm sold a British Blue x cow for 1001kg at 164.5p totalling £1646 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Cornthwaite, Balgray Hill sold a Simmental x heifer for 629kg at 228.5p totalling £1437 to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Struthers, Collielaw Farm sold a Limousin cow for 604kg at 207.5p totalling £1253 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Mr Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 819kg at 185.5p totalling £1519 to Michael Helliwell.

A great entry of 244 dairy cast cows on offer with a flying trade from start to finish. Bluestone Farming sold an Austrian born Fleckvieh cow for 987kg at 159.5p totalling £1574 to Phillip Bowes. Messrs Hall, Prior Hall sold a great run of Friesian cows for 929kg at 148.5p totalling £1379 and 833kg at 144.5p totalling £1203 bought by Michael Helliwell and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dockeray, Kelsick House sold a Holstein x cow for 853kg at 156.5p totalling £1334 to Michael Helliwell. PRIME SHEEP: Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Prime Sheep which drew a much larger entry of 1796 head.  All classes of lambs met a good enquiry but were subject to reduced rates, not least the heavy sheep with 40% of the sale out with the SQQ.  Those with lighter hoggs enjoyed a trade very similar on the week.  Messrs Sparke, Little Swinburn, Hexham brought forward an exceptional run of lambs to lead the day’s trade at £185 per head for 45kg Beltex Hoggs which also led the days pence per kilo at 411.1p with their consignment averaging £152.13 per head.

Heavy hoggs sold to £158 for a cracking pair of 52kg Texel hoggs from Josh Merrall, The Green, Irthington.

CAST EWES & RAMS: The weekly sale of cast ewes and rams topped at £168 for two Texel cross ewes from Mr Josh Merrell, The Green. All classes of ewes continue to rise on the week, with demand currently very high. Swaledales sold to a top of £99 for 8 from Messrs Morton, Church Farm. Suffolk topped at £152 from Pearsbyhall Farming. Mules peaked at £124 for a pen of 15 from Messrs Nixon, Ribton House.
