On Monday 21st February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller offering of 60 prime bulls forward with yet another superb trade seen throughout.  Less quality was seen by all but despite this, 13 bulls achieved £1800 or higher and 7 entered the £2000 plus bracket to a day’s top of £2371.65 for 943 kgs from Messrs Wilson, Reddings, Moffat.  Steven Wilson sold second best at 858kgs to £2260.83.  Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill, Wigton 884kgs to £2161.38 and Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Wishaw to £2146.91, all the aforementioned were Limousins and purchased by Bowland Foods Preston.  Messrs Ward, West Mains, Lanark’s debut to Borderway was well worth the trip with one of their Simmentals peaking at £2068.39. The journey was also worthwhile for Barrie Farmers, Howburn, Biggar selling one of their Aberdeen Angus to £1879.20 both purchased by A & D Meats.  Top overall pence per kilo was another from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside peaking at 275.5p and 272.5p both Limousins.  Black and whites peaked at £1465.22 for a Friesian from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie, this was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  The top pence per kilo of 216.5p was paid to Messrs Martin, Horseholm Farm, Dumfries for one of their Fleckviehs purchased again by Jewitt Meats.

PRIME CATTLE: A smaller entry of 78 prime steers and heifers forward at Borderways weekly prime stock sale whereby a great trade was seen throughout the sale for all qualities. Top overall was a Limousin cross steer at 798kgs from Messrs Smithson, Bloan Farm, Kirkby Stephen achieving £1959.09 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.   Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie sold a 779kgs Simmental cross at £1904.66 and was purchased by Mr Eric Hall.  Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle sold their best at £1842.95.  Top price per kilo of 265.5p was paid to Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle with their 646kg Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods.  Heifers saw a day’s top of £1839.86 for a 709kg Limousin cross from Messrs Stampers, Rose Farm, Cockermouth purchased again by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill, Carlisle sold 665kgs at £1778.88. Top price per kilo of the day was a 567kgs British Blue cross from Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby being purchased by Bowland Foods Ltd, Preston.  Messrs Miller, High Aketon, Wigton run of 8 peaked at 274.50p and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin.

CAST COWS:  Once again a great entry of 263 cast cows was on offer to an increased ring side of buyers which ensured a massive lift in trade with H&H driving the cast cow trade up. With an average of 153.4p up 19p on the week. A great entry of 120 cast beef cows on offer to average an amazing 1784.1p which was up 20.7p on the week. Messrs Telfer & Son, Newton High House sold the top priced British Blue cow for 904kg at 229.5p totalling £2074 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mitchinson & Son, High Green Hill sold a British Blue x cow for 789kg at 225.5p totalling £1779 to Owain Llyr. H&K Farms’ run of Aberdeen Angus cows topped at 807kg at 215.5p totalling £1739 and 758kg at 211.5p totalling £1603 both bought by Les Fell. Messrs Norman Farming Co, Little Orton Farms run of Limousin cows topped at 820kg at 206.5p totalling £1693 and 840kg at 195.5p totalling £1642 both bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Stamper & Son, Rose Farm sold the top priced Charolais x cow for 871kg at 184.5p totalling £1607 to Messrs Roberts. Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank Farm, Lanark’s run of cows topped at 861kg at 186.5p totalling £1605 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Mactier, Boghouse Farm sold a Limousin x heifer for 225.5p to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Campbell, Strawfrank Farm sold a Limousin x heifer for 225.5p to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Allgood, Nunwick Hall sold a Staberlizer for 217.5p to Jewitt Meats. Messrs Nimmo, Bogside Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 592kg at 210.5p totalling £1246 also to Jewitt Meats. Barrie Farmers, Howburn Farm, Biggar sold a Limousin cow for 679kg at 207.5p totalling £1408 to David Holmes.

A great run of 140 dairy cast cows was on offer with all classes in great demand and an average of 136.7p being up 11.3p on the week.  Messrs Workman, Beeches Farm sold an outstanding Montbeliarde x cow for 829kg at 176.5p totalling £1463 and 852kg at 155.5p totalling £1324 and a Fleckvieh cow for 835kg at 155.5p totalling £1298 all purchased by Les Fell. Messrs Little, Kirkbride House sold a Norwegian red cow for 801kg at 169.5p totalling £1357 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Coulthard & Son, Brisco Hill sold a Holstein x cow at 813kg at 165.5p totalling £1345 to Thomas Ball. Messrs Moffat & Co, Kirtlebank Farm sold a Holstein x cow for 844kg at 158.5p to £1337 to Les Fell. Messrs Clark, Whin Farm sold the top priced Friesian cow for 788kg at 161.5p totalling £1272 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Armour, Milton Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 207.5p to Brian Capper. CAST BULLS: The 10 stock bulls on offer topped at 1218kg at 173.5p totalling £2113 for a Salers 988kg at 183.5p totalling £1812 for a Simmental from Messrs Ward, Mains Farm both bought by Owain Llyr. Messrs Carruthers, Silloans sold a British Blue stock bull for 992kg at 179.5p totalling £1780 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of 1700 Prime hoggs, as with last week a large number of heavy sheep, (in fact 51% of the sale) forward along with 614 Hill bred sheep (35% of the sale), all classes sold relatively easily with handy weight sheep in short supply and commanding a premium.  The Sale averaged 255p with a SQQ of 269p or £116.28 per head.

Leading the sale at £152 was a pen of heavy hoggs from Messrs Toppin, Bascodyke, Armathwaite which sold to Mr G Lomax.  Top per kilo was Messrs R & BS Laird, Unity, Brampton who sold 41kg lambs to £150 or 365.9ppk.
