Kirkby Stephen Prime Sheep Sale

Harrison & Hetherington Ltd, Kirkby Stephen Mart held their weekly sale of prime sheep on Tuesday night, when 4,106 sheep were forward consisting of 3,516 prime hoggs and 590 cast sheep.

Topping the sale at £175.50 and 417.9p/kg were a pair of 42kg Beltex cross hoggs from Messrs Sutcliffe, Church Farm, Middlesbrough.

Messrs Andrews, Boscar Flats, York sold a pen of six 43kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £171.50, another pen of five 42kg hoggs sold to make £170, and 45kg hoggs making £170 also from Boscar Flats.

The consignment of 64 hoggs from this home sold to average 41.9kg £164.02 (391.5p).

Messrs Sutcliffe, Middlesbrough sold a pair of 43kg hoggs to make £171, with another pair of 36kg hoggs making £150 (416.7p/kg) also from this home.

Messrs Slack, Stoneriggs sold 34kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £142 (417.6p/kg).

Messrs Richardson, Low Garth, Cockermouth sold 40kg Beltex cross hoggs to make £167 (417.5p/kg).

Messrs Elliot, Espland House, Penrith sold a pen of four 39kg hoggs to make £161.50 (414.1p/kg).

D&A Livestock, Harrogate sold a pen of ten 38kg Beltex crosses to make £151.50 (398.7p/kg)

Messrs Robshaw, Tadcaster sold 48kg hoggs to £171.

Messrs Skelton, Newhall Farm, Maryport sold 43kg hoggs to make £170.

Another great SQQ average of 281.5p/kg and overall average of 266p/kg for 3516 hoggs was achieved with this including over 1000 mule and horned and 1536 heavy and overweight hoggs.

All classes were sharper with the best bred hoggs being the dearest recently seen.

Mule hoggs topped at £130 for a pen of fourteen from Messrs Graham, Brechin with another pen of 40 mules from this home selling for £125.

Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown sold Blackfaced hoggs to 261.4p/kg for a pen of twenty 44kg making £115.

Heavy hoggs were much dearer, with many being £10-£15 up on some trades last week.

Messrs Robshaw, Tadcaster sold a pen of 50kg hoggs to £157 (314p/kg)

Messrs Elliot, Espland House sold 50kg hoggs to make £153.50.

Messrs Dickinson, Kirkbarrow Hall sold a pen of 15 54kg Texel cross hoggs to make £145 (268.5p/kg).

Messrs Patchett, Ripon sold pens of thirty Texel cross hoggs weighing 53kg to make £135.50 (255.7p/kg) 52kg to £133 (255.8p/kg) and a pen of thirty 51kg Texel crosses to £130.50 (255.9p/kg)

68 pens and 284 lambs sold between £150 and £175

67 pens and 328 hoggs sold between 350p/kg and 417.9p/kg

Cast ewes topped at £180 on two separate occasions firstly for a Bluefaced Leicester ewes from Kilnstown Farm and also for three Texel cross ewes from Messrs Richardson, Etherley House, Darlington.

Cheviot ewes topped at £137.50 for a pen of thirteen from Messrs Patterson, Coupland Beck.

All classes of cast sheep were the dearest seen for sometime and many more are needed to fulfil extreme demand from our fourteen active buyers.
