On Monday 28th February, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: An increased show of 87 Prime bulls forward with trade every bit as good as last week seeing 15 bulls sell over £1800 and 10 bulls over £2000 to a day’s top of £2411 for a 940kgs Limousin from local vendors Messrs Priestley, Cracrop Farm, Brampton purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.   Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields, Lockerbie sold 944kgs to £2393.04.  Messrs Eve, Stubbsgill, Wigton to £2338.10 and Messrs Scott, Daltonhook, Lockerbie to £2337.82.  British Blues to £2030.33 from Messrs Gill, Hallfield House Farm, Harrogate.  Simmentals to £1836 from Messrs Lambie, Fallhills Farmhouse, Penicuik purchased by A & D Meats.  Top overall pence per kilo of 268.50 was achieved twice firstly from a Limousin cross from Messrs D A Harrison, Hill House, Wigton and secondly by Messrs Watson, Sanders Close, Brampton.

Black and white bulls were seen to top at £1461 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Carlisle and purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.  Top price per kilo of 227.50 was for a Fleckvieh from Messrs Moscrop & Waugh, Albyfield and Friesians to 215.50 from Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton.  More could have been sold.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another fantastic entry of 72 Prime steer and heifers forward with a buoyant trade seen throughout topping the sale at £1873 was a 763kg Limousin cross steer from our weekly supporters Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton who also sold the second best at £1845 both of which were purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle sold a British Blue cross to £1736 purchased by Mr Eric Hall. Top price per kilo of 264.50p was paid to Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle for one of their 648kg Limousin cross and was purchased by Chapman Butchers. Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth run of 12 peaked at 263.50p and purchased by Pioneer Foods. Heifers were seen to peak at £1775.99 for 674kgs to Messrs Wilson, Petteril Hill Farm, Southwaite and purchased by Steven Wilson Butcher Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle. Top overall price per kilo of 284.50p was paid for Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby for 579kgs and was bought by Owain Llyr.  Messrs Fletcher, Black Cleugh, Lockerbie sold another Limousin cross at 279.50ppk again purchased by Owain Llyr. More cattle needed for the continued growth in Borderway Primestock weekly sale.

CAST COWS:  A great entry of 332 cast cows were on offer with 116 beef cast cows selling to average 169.7ppk and topping at 1002kg, 201.5ppk or £2019 for a Limousin cow from Messrs Wight & Son, Whitrighill Farm, Melrose, with Limousin cross cows from the same home selling for 742kg, 229.5ppk or £1702 and to 855kg, 187.5ppk £1603 and a Simmental cow sold for 826kg, 185.5ppk op £1532 purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick and Michael Helliwell. Messrs Armstrong, High Tarns Farm, Wigton  sold the top priced British Blue cow for 800kg, 227.5ppk or £1820 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Bell, Woodhall Farm, Hexham run of cows topped at 797kg, 215.5ppk or £1717 purchase by Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Lambrig & Son, Fallhills sold a Simmental cow for 739kg, 203.5ppk or £1503 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Fergusson, East Side Farm sold a Charolais cross heifer for 568kg, 215.5ppk or £1224 to Alan Jarvis. Messrs Reay & Sons, West Moorhouse, Maften run of cows topped at 646kg, 213.5ppk or £1379 for an overage Limousin cross heifer purchased by Jewitts. Messrs Kirkwood & Son, Mouswald Grange sold a Simmental cross heifer for 587kg, 213.5ppk or £1253 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Graham, Fell View sold two young Limousin cows for 576kg, 211.5ppk or £1218 and to 602kg, 211.5ppk or £1273 purchased by Jewitts & Owain Llyr.

A total of 216 dairy cast cows were on offer and again the trade lifted 6.3p on the week, with an amazing average of 144.4ppk and 24 selling to £1200+.

Messrs Errington, Lowther Low Moor topped the day with a Fleckvieh selling for 857kg, 170.5ppk or £1461 to Philip Bowes. Messrs Graham, Campfield Farm run of cows topped at 839kg, 173.5ppk or £1455 for a Montbeliarde cross and 820kg, 164.5ppk or £1348 for a British Friesian cow purchased by Philip Bowes and Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Little & Son, Kirkbride House sold a Norwegian Red heifer for 785kg, 184.5ppk or £1448 to Thomas Ball. Messrs Graves, Elephant Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 783kg, 177.5ppk or £1389 also to Thomas Ball. Messrs Workman, Beeches sold a Montbelairde cross cow for 841kg, 163.5ppk or £1375 to Les Fell. Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown Farm sold a Holstein cross heifer for 720kg, 188.5ppk £1357 to Les Fell. Messrs Harrison & Sons, Down Hall sold a Holstein cross cow for 849kg, 153.5ppk or £1303 to Philip Bowes. Messrs Dickinson, High House sold two British Friesian heifers for 607kg, 208.5ppk or £1265 and to 598kg, 201.5ppk or £1204 both purchased by Thomas Ball. Messrs Bell, Wood Hall, Hexham sold a Limousin stock bull for 984kg, 177.5ppk or £1746 to Mr Kirkpatrick. Messrs Caotsworth & Son, East Rackwood sold a Charolais stock bull for 1099kg, 149.5ppk or £1643 to Pickstocks.

PRIME SHEEP: At the weekly sale of Prime Sheep which saw numbers rise again to 1922 head plus 110 ewes.  All classes of hoggs would see a slight increase on the week to level at 260ppk, 272.36ppk SQQ or £119 per head.  Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton led the way this week with outstanding 40kg Beltex hoggs selling for 425ppk and a sale leading £170 per head.  Heavy hoggs were sharper on the week to a top of £160 from Messrs Toppin, Bascodyke, Penrith and 282.6p from Messrs Fell, Stanger Hill, Wigton.  Heavy mules topped at £141 for some magnificent hoggs from Jon Fell Junior, Stanger Hill, Wigton and to 254.1 for a pen from Messrs Bowman, Brampton Fell.  Hill hoggs to £132 again for heavies from Messrs Dixon, Stobbs, Hexham for Blackies and to 275.1p for Cheviots from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown
