Two Heifers Top at £2500 on Ash Wednesday

The Borderway Sale centre had an outstanding offering of freshly calved cows and heifers from many of the leading herds in the north of England and Scotland.  Trade topped at £2500 on two occasions with the average for milking heifers coming to £1938 with 43 animals selling for or more than £2000.  

The sale was sponsored by North Western Farmers with the top price heifers receiving the winning tickets.  The first heifer to sell for £2500 was consigned by Michael Wilson from the Wreaywood herd.  She was sired by Bomaz AltaMonson and was giving 36kgs, her dam was produced over 5% butterfat as a three year old.  Another ten animals from this home sold to average £2097 with a Rager Red second lactation cow giving almost 60kgs selling for £2380. 

£2500 - Messrs Wilson, Wreaywood Herd

The second heifer to sell for £2500 was consigned by the Baillie family from Longlea Farm in Lanarkshire.  Netherlea AltaBlast Tatum was a powerful framed heifer with perfect legs and feet and a super attractive udder.  Four other heifers from this herd sold to average £2112 with Netherlea AltaObello Angel seeling for £2350.

£2500 - Messrs Baille, Longlea

John Craig and Son from Carneil Farm near Dunfermline sold five cracking animals to average £2375, topping the cow trade at £2480 with Kibbleston Max Ivy was had recently calved in her second and was giving 45kgs and was sired by Woodcrest Mr Max.  Kibbleston Totem Bess sold for £2380, she was a special uddered heifer giving 34kgs.

The Covington herd owned by the Baillie family from Hillhead Farm sold five cows and heifers with Covington Hartley Whitney selling for £2450.  This black silky hided cow was giving 51kgs and was sired by De-Su Hartley her ninth dam was the two time World Dairy Expo Champion Merkley Starbuck Whitney.  This very milky group averaged £2130. 

Richard Livingstone owner of the Kirtlevale herd sold ten super heifers topping at £2350 for Kirtlevale Pepper Palm.  She was sired by Delaberge Pepper and was sold giving 34kgs.

Balcurvie Holsteins sold sixteen heifers to average over £2000 and topped £2350 for a daughter of Aladdin Red.  She traced back to the Gail family from Startmore.

A small number of Ayrshire heifers topped at £2280 for a heifer giving 35kgs from the Troutbeck herd owned by the Mattinson family.

British Friesian animals were once again in demand with their average coming to £1925 and topping at £2050 for a second lactation cow consigned from the Bells from the Nerewater herd near Wigton.
