Annual Spring Suckled Calf Show & Sale

Borderway, Rosehill, Carlisle, CA1 2RS

On Friday 4th & Saturday 5th March Harrison & Hetherington conducted their special March show & Sale of 910 Continental cross suckled calves.

A new date and a return to an old format reaped the rewards for all vendors, with many making their first trip to Borderway.

Friday nights show of individual show cattle saw 96 of the finest cattle brought forward with many commenting that this was the best show of cattle ever seen at this event with a huge crowd in attendance to witness such a spectacle.

The show was kindly sponsored by Dugdale Nutrition, AW Jenkinson & Carrs Billington with Briggy’s Butchers, Jedburgh supplying pies for onlookers to enjoy.

After purchasing a heifer from last years sale which went on to win the Royal Welsh Winter Fair, Mr Paul Tippetts, Shifnal was invited to Judge the classes and did so with great competence and expertise.

Taking this years championship was the first prize halter led British Blue heifer shown by John Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltcliffe a worthy Champion in everyone’s eyes, she sold for the leading price and set a new centre record of £9500 selling to Blair Dufton and Gareth Small.

Messrs Smith-Jackson completed the double with their haltered Limousin cross heifer being tapped out as the Overall Reserve Champion, she later sold for £7000 to Andrew Dickinson, Ashbourne.

The bullock championship was claimed by Messrs Harrison, Grange Hall with their 1st prize Limousin bullock which claimed the joint top price in this section of £3000 which sold to James Nisbet, Ayrshire.

The Reserve bullock was consigned by Brian Harper, Greenwells with his baby Limousin bullock who also achieved £3000 selling to the Judge.

Dafydd Lewis, Pentwyn, Llanwrda made his first trip to Borderway and claimed the 2nd highest price of £7500 with his Limousin cross heifer which sold to Ross Withers, Cornwall.

Craig Robertson ,Newton of Logierait sold a fantastic run of 46 to average an incredible £1817.39 with heifers selling to £6000, £5800 and £4800.

Not just a show cattle sale, this noted event drew 910 head of the best quality cattle aged 8-12m which saw the average rise £50 on the year, to level at £1275 a head, with all classes seeing a fantastic demand on Saturday.

The pens of 4 were kindly judged by Mike Eddan, Pickering along with  grandsons Lyes and Lotfi Berkache, who awarded the best pen of 4 bullocks to Shona T Laird & Son, Sunnyside Farm which sold at £1270, this class was kindly sponsored by the NBS.
