On Monday 7th March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS: A smaller show of only 73 Prime bulls forward with all classes selling dearer on the week, with 15 selling over £1800 and 11 at £2000 plus to a day’s overall top of £2433.32, a new centre record, this was a 1016kg Limousin from Messrs Mulholland, Carlisle selling to Messrs Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Wilson, Gate Farm, Wigton sold 932kg to £2381.22 and Messrs Hutton, Setmabanning, Keswick sold 944kgs to £2355.28 both purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Messrs Currie, Pinclanty Farm, Girvan made their debut selling in Borderway a worthwhile journey selling the top priced Simmental to £2341.28 weighing 1007kg. Messrs Gwynne, Castlewigg, Newton Stewart to £2268 for their 1024kg Simmental. Salers from Messrs McTaggart, Dunjop, Castle Douglas also broke into the £2000 club selling their 998kg to £2190.61 purchased by A & D Meats. Top overall pence per kilo came from D A Harrison, Hill House, Wigton with one of their 691kg Limousin crosses peaking at 289.5p and 680kgs to 283.5p both purchased by Frasers Butchers, High Street, Stranraer.
Dairy bred bulls sold to a day’s top of £1475.33 for a 711kgs Friesian from Messrs Graham, Hillhead, Canonbie purchased by Bowland Foods and top pence per kilo of 220.50p was paid to Messrs Dickinson, High House, Wigton for another Friesian, and this time it was purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE: A much smaller show of only 58 Prime steers and heifers forward with all classes showing a rise in trade once again with buyers being left short in their orders. Top overall and the joining the £2000 club was Messrs Bell, Hoddamtown, Lockerbie with one of their 754kgs achieving £2009.41 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold another 778 kg to £1933.33 and Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle sold 692kg to £1927.22 and purchased by Ralph Pearson, Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Messrs Studholme also sold top priced British Blue cross steer to £1811.04 for 672kgs again to Ralph Pearsons, Charolais crosses to £1783.21 from Messrs Gate, Brackendene, Cockermouth for 754kgs. Top price per kilo steer was that of Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm receiving 278.50p to Ralph Pearson and 275.5p to Chapman Butchers, Wishaw.
Heifers saw a day’s top of £1955 for 723kg. Limousin cross from Messrs Crichton, Loughrigg, Egremont and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle, the same vendors sold a 714kg to £1831.41 again for a Limousin cross. Messrs Ridley, Woodhall, Wigton sold the top overall pence per kilo heifer at 298.5p for 609kgs which equates to £1817.87 and was purchased by Owain Llyr, Ruthin. Messrs Little, Greenhill, Wigton sold their best at 573kg Limousin cross to 287.5p again purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Little sold a 568kg to 275.5p and was purchased by Frasers Butchers, Stranraer. Many more clean cattle are required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand.

CAST COWS: Once again a great entry of 304 cast cows from Aberdeen, Wooler and Newcastle were presented to an increased ringside of buyers which again lifted the trade. 105 beef cows sold to an amazing average of 183.5p up 13.8p on the week. Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk sold an outstanding Limousin cow for 821kg at 249.5p totalling £2048 to Owain Llyr. DA Harrison & Co, Hill House Farm’s run of cows topped at 797kg at 236.5p totalling £1884 also to Owain Llyr. Messrs Malone, Pitcairn Farm, Cardenden sold a Limousin x cow for 778kg at 241.5p totalling £1878 to Owain Llyr. Mr Bruce Goldie, Townfoot Farm sold a Limousin cow for 891kg at 202.5p totalling £1804 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Houldey, Kirtleton House sold a Maine Anjou cow for 838kg at 214.5p totalling £1707 and Maine Anjou heifer for 730kg at 235.5p totalling £1719 to Owain Llyr and Alan Jarvis. A great entry of 199 dairy cast cows were on offer with all classes being sharper on the week and an average of 145.5p being up 2p on the week. Mr David Harrison, Dundraw Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 761kg at 197.5p totalling £1502 to Les Fell. Bluestone Farming sold a 44 month old Fleckvieh cow for 838kg at 177.5p totalling £1487 to Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Brough, Langfauld sold a 81 month old Holstein x cow for 913kg at 156.5p totalling £1428 to Scotbeef. Messrs Coulthard, Justicetown Farm sold a 67 month old Holstein x cow for 902kg at 157.5p totalling £1420 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Wilson, Gate Farm sold a 71 month old Holstein x cow for 834kg at 169.5p totalling £1413 to Pickstocks. Messrs Teasdale & Sons, Halefield Farm sold a 173 month old MRI cow for 891kg at 158.5p totalling £1412 to Charles Kirkpatrick. CAST BULLS: 7 stock bulls and bullocks were on offer and topped at 1013kg at 185.5p totalling £1879 for a Limousin stock bull from Messrs Teasdale, Kellah and bought by Thomas Ball. Messrs Telford & Son, Edenlin sold a Limousin stock bull for 955kg at 184.5p totalling £1761 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Sargent, Lincowell sold a 61 month old Limousin x bullock for 726kg at 210.5p totalling £1528 to Jewitt Meats.

PRIME SHEEP: Harrison and Hetherington held their weekly sale of Prime hoggs with a smaller entry on the week with last week’s decline in trade nationally from Tuesday onwards steading numbers up. This helped trade for all classes with Borderway faring well against other outlets. Export weight sheep of all classes were in particular good to sell. The fall in sale averages to £117.68 sees a £2 drop on the week. Alan Bowman, Brampton Fell kindly donated a Mule hogg to be sold in aid of the Ukrainian Refugee Appeal which sold for £220 and purchased by Mr Robert Skelton. Other hoggs topped at £162 or 385.7p for Beltex lambs from Tom & Julia Airey, New Grange, Dearham. Top price per kilo was 405.7p again from Beltex from Anne Little Hollands, Penton.

CAST EWES & RAMS: Trade was on fire with prices continuing to rise. Horned ewes were as dear as they have been for a long time with Blackfaced ewes at £112 for 4 from Messrs Grieve, Whiteside and Swale ewes to £108 from Messrs Fisher, Reaygarth. Topping today’s sale at £185 was a Texel ewe from Messrs Nelson, Braitwaite Hall. Mules also sold very well regularly reaching £125+ and topping at £130 from Messrs Martin, Boggle Hall. Cheviot ewes sold to £113 from Messrs Clark, Pennyhill. A whole sale average of £111 was achievd with Messrs Grieve’s run of 21 Blackfaced ewes averaging £98.
