On Monday 21st March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.
PRIME BULLS: A far better offering of 93 prime bulls forward with a better trade to match. 16 sold for over £1800 and 7 over £2000 up to a UK record breaking price of £3235.10 for a 1073kg British Blue from Messrs Pattinson, Temon Farm, Brampton purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick, Lockerbie. Messrs Blackwood & Davidson, Auldton Cottage, Lanark sold another 947kg at £2836 the second highest ever record for a British Blue. Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan sold an 968kg Limousin to a new centre breed record of £2724 purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston. Charolais sold to £1945 for 995kgs from Messrs Wight, Carwood Farm, Baggar and purchased by A & D Meats. Top overall pence per kilo at 301.5p was the aforementioned British Blue from Temon Farm. Top Limousin cross was 298.5p from Messrs Maw, Wintershields, Bewcastle for 671kga. Dairy bred bulls peaked at a new centre record of £1644 for an 812kg Holstein Friesian and top pence per kilo of 236.5p for 526kg Friesian from Messrs Preston, Wed Holme, Carlisle and purchased by Blackbrow Abattoir Wigton.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another resounding success at Borderway weekly primestock sale with 95 head of steers and heifer forward and 18 cattle selling over £1800 and 4 achieving £2000 or more up to a day’s top of £2179 for an outstanding 723kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle selling to R & JP Mulholland Butchers, Great Orton, Carlisle. Messrs Twentyman, Osborne Farm, Wigton sold a 762kg, 34 month old heifer to £2133 purchased by Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale. Messrs Story, Newbiggin Farm, Carlisle sold 727kgs equating to £2031 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top overall heifer pence per kilo came from Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton achieving a top of 311.5ppk with no fewer than 5 in total for this same home achieving 301.5p and above.
Steers saw a day’s top of £2052 for a 788kg Limousin cross from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Graham, Miller Hill sold 741kg to £1982 and a 745kg Limousin cross from Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton to £1955 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford. Top British Blue cross steer came out at £1886 from Bothel Parks to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Top pence per kilo of 274.5p was paid to Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm for a 644kg Limousin cross purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.

CAST COWS: A great entry of 305 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with trade again being sharper on the week. 97 beef cows sold to average 257.5p with 28 selling for over 200p. Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres Mains sold two outstanding British Blue cows for 934kg at 249.5p totalling £2330 and 917kg at 239.5p totalling £2196 both purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Harryman, Keskadale Farm’s run of Limousin x cows sold for 807kg at 239.5p totalling £1932 and 681kg at 257.5p totalling £1753 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick and Owain Llyr. Messrs Jenkinson, Clifton Moor’s run of Limousin cows topped at 949kg at 234.5p totalling £2225, 878kg at 219.5p totalling £1927 and 814kg at 219.5p totalling £1786 bought by Owain Llyr and Charles Kirkpatrick(x2). Messrs Norman, Little Orton Farm’s Limousin cows topped at 849kg at 241.5p totalling £2050 to Charles Kirkpatrick. PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime sheep saw numbers remain similar on the week. A huge entry of heavy hoggs (63% of the sale) continue to find a limited enquiry. Leading the sale at £152 were a fantastic pair of heavy hoggs from CR & CL Donaldson, Hazel House, York which sold to Steven Wilson Butchers, Corby Hill. Messrs Donaldson also led per kilo selling a pair of 4 hoggs at 347.1ppk or £151 per head. Hill hoggs continue to sell well with Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown selling 46kg Blackies at £117 regularly being pounds dearer on the week.

CAST EWES: Trade continues to be very strong and sharper on the week. Topping today’s sale at £200 was a Blue Texel from Ali Dodd, Tundergarth Mains whose sale proceeds go to Cancer Research. The sheep was resold on 3 occasions and finally sold for £175 to Mr Robert Skelton with the total money raised being £800. A sale average of £119.50 was achieved. Beltex ewes topped at £178 from Messrs Dickinson, High House with the same home topping the mules at £138. Suffolks topped at £170 from Messrs Borthwick, Catlins. Messrs Dodd, Tundergarth Mains sold his run of Romney ewes to top at £113 for a pen of 10.
