On Monday 28th March, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A much smaller, plainer and lighter offering of bulls forward at Borderway’s weekly sale seeing trade sharper on the week once again throughout the sale

Top overall was an 833kg British Blue cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan equating to £2461.52 and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston, Charolais from Messrs Goldie, Greenfield, Annan to £2139.68 for 829kgs and first time vendors from of WP Ross Taylor, Littlegill Farm, Lanark sold two 817kg and 863kg  Aberdeen Angus to £1793.32 and £1782.15.  Top overall pence per kilo went to the aforementioned British Blue cross from Upper Brydekirk receiving 295.0p.  Messrs Rome, Niven Hill, Gretna sold a Limousin cross to 284.5p for 620 kgs purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Dairy bulls peaked at £1606.88 for a Dairy Shorthorn from Messrs Walker, Morton Farm, Penrith purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Top price Holstein Friesian sold to £1464.61 from Messrs Graham, South Lambhill, Carlisle purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Top pence per kilo of 233.5p was paid for the previously mentioned Dairy Shorthorn.  British Friesians peaked at 227.5p from Messrs Graham, Middle Farm, Wigton purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor.

PRIME CATTLE: Yet another fantastic entry and trade achieved for the 76 Prime steers and heifers forward.  Eighteen cattle sold to over £1800 with six selling over £2000 to a day’s top of £2108.94 for an outstanding 731kg Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Studholme 3 heifers averaged 696.33 kgs, 290.25p and a grand total of £2021.11.  Aberdeen Angus cross heifers from Messrs Pearson, High Plasket Lands, Maryport to £1505.51 and purchased by James Chapman, Butchers, Wishaw.  Top overall pence per kilo was 298.5p for 649kg from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm and purchased by Steven Wilson Butcher, Corby Hill, Carlisle.  Messrs Airey, The Close, Carlisle sold 580kg to 296.50p purchased by Geoff Nutter.  Messrs Philipson, Glebe Farm, Penrith sold 537kg to 295.5p purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  Steers sold to a top of £2076.98 for 765kg Limousin x from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown, Lockerbie purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold 739kg Limousin x to £2065.51 purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers.  Messrs Nicholson, The Lake, Carlisle to £2017.05 for a 714kg Limousin cross purchased by Morgan Helliwell.  Top pence per kilo of 284.5 was paid to Messrs Rome, Niven hill, Gretna with their 630kg Limousin cross peaking at 284.5p and purchased by Ralph Pearson.

CAST COWS:  A smaller show of 215 cast cows was on offer to one of the dearest trades seen in any market. 45 beef cows sold to average 190.7p being up 3.2p. Mr Gary Bell, Haas Side Farm sold two outstanding cows which sold for 810kg at 244.5p at £1980 for a British Blue x and 678kg at 249.5p totalling £1691 for a Limousin x purchased by Owain Llyr. Messrs Goldie, Townfoot’s run of cows topped at 832kg at 226.5p totalling £1884 for a Limousin and 822kg at 195.5p totalling £1607 for a Simmental purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick and Sean McGimpsey. Messrs Goldie, South Bowerhouse sold the top priced Charolais cow for 1031kg at 177.5p totalling £1830 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Webster, East Plenmellor Farm cows topped at 808kg at 201.5p totalling £1628 for a Limousin x bought by Micheal Helliwell.

All classes of 170 dairy cast cows sold to average 154.5p being up 9.2p on the week. Messrs Crichton & Son, Limekilns Farm’s run of cows topped at 815kg at 188.5p totalling £1536 for a 52 month old Fleckvieh cow bought by Messrs Roberts. Messrs Pattinson & Son, Walby Hall’s run of Holstein x cows topped at 845kg at 177.5p totalling £1499 for a 71 month old Holstein x cow bought by Messrs Roberts & a 63 month old Holstein x cow for 858kg at 167.5p totalling £1437 to Pickstocks. Messrs Irving, Becton Hall sold a Holstein x heifer for 855kg at 173.5p totalling £1488 to Les Fell. Messrs Pollock, Faulds Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 790kg at 185.5p totalling £1465 bought by Alan Jarvis. Mr Colin Horsley, Whitrigg Grange sold a 89 month old Holstein x cow for 810kg at 176.5p totalling £1429 to Pickstocks. Messrs Robinson, Pelutho Park sold the top priced Friesian heifer for 209.5p to Jewitts. Messrs Pollock, Faulds Farm sold a Holstein x heifer for 199.5p to Les Fell. Messrs Errington, Lowther Low Moor sold a Fleckvieh heifer for 197.5p totalling Alan Jarvis. Messrs Ramsey, Dockray Hall sold a Friesian heifer for 197.5p to David Holmes. CAST BULLS: 3 stock bulls on offer. Messrs Hodgson, Green Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 997kg at 213.5p totalling £2128 to Owain Llyr. Messrs Story, Blackrigg sold an Aberdeen Angus stock bull for 1274kg at 162.5p totalling £2070 to Owain Llyr.

PRIME SHEEP: The weekly sale of prime hoggs saw an increased entry of 1905 head forward. All classes of sheep saw an increased enquiry on the week, with the overall average lifting close to 10ppk, despite a lack of any top end export types being forward, which equates to £117.24 per head. Leading the way this week was a cracking Texel cross hogg from Messrs Millar, Woodhousehill, Lockerbie which sold to £154 to Roberts Skelton

Top pence per kilo of 347.4ppk for a Texel hoggs bought forward by Messrs Hunter, Stoneraise, Wigton. Hill hoggs sold to £128 for Blackface hoggs from Messrs Fisher, Smalmstown, Longtown and to 274.4ppk from JW Coulthard, Brisco Hill, Longtown. Mule hoggs sold to £125.50 for a pen of heavies from Phillip Walton, Beech Croft, Cockermouth and to 255.3ppk from T 7 AT Bowman, Brough Fell, Brampton.

CAST EWES: Ewe trade continues to rise topping at £208 and another lot of four Suffolk ewes to £202.  A fantastic sale average of £126 with Swales selling to a top of £92 from Thrimby Farms.  Continental ewes sell with ease with well fleshed ewes easily selling in excess of £160.  Mules topped at £126 from Messrs Palmer, Grange Farm.   Take advantage of rising trade, many more required to meet demand.
