On Monday 4^th April, Harrison & Hetherington held their weekly sale of Primestock.

PRIME BULLS: A slight increase of only 65 Prime bulls forward at Borderways weekly sale whereby trade was again seen to be dearer on the week.  Nine bulls achieved over £2000 to a day’s top of £2734 which sets a new centre record for the British Limousin cattle breed here in Borderway.  This animal was shown by Messrs SJ Nixon, Hunters Hall, Wigton and purchased by Bowland Foods, Preston.  Messrs Nixon sold another to £2695, Messrs Priestley, Cracrop, Brampton to £2545, £2409 from Messrs Watret, Maulscastle, Annan and £2381 from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan.  Simmentals from Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains, Annan sold to £2392.  Charolais crosses to £1744 from Messrs Taylor, Heatheryhall, Lanark purchased by Jewitt Meats, Spennymoor and Aberdeen Angus to £1701 from W P Ross Taylor, Littlegill Farm, Biggar again purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Top overall pence per kilo of 299.50 went to Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk and purchased by Bowland Foods.  Black and whites sold to a day’s top of £1614 for a Holstein Friesian from Messrs Armour, Milton Farm, Moffat purchased by Jewitt Meats.  Friesians to £1586 from Messrs Clark, Whins, Lockerbie.  Top pence per kilo of 219.50p was paid to the Whins Farm, for another British Friesian.

PRIME CATTLE: A good entry of 68 Prime steers and heifers forward with yet another fantastic trade seen throughout.  Topping the sale overall at £2104 was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Bell, Hoddomtown purchased by Ralph Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.  Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton sold another to £2029 and again purchased by Ralph Pearsons.   Messrs Dent, Elm House, Appleby sold top priced British Blue cross to £1936 and purchased by Pioneer Foods, Carlisle.  Top pence per kilo of 285.5p was paid to Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks, Wigton selling a 711 kgs Limousin cross.  Heifers sold to a day’s top of £1972 for a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse Farm, Carlisle purchased by Ralph Pearsons.   Messrs Stamper, Rose Farm, Cockermouth sold 797 kgs Maine Anjou cross to £1924 and purchased by Jewitt Meats.  British Blues to £1809 from Messrs Graves, Old Town, Carlisle for a 1^st cross British Blue and Messrs Gatherer, Mackies Mill, Glasgow sold a Charolais heifer to £1805 purchased by Charles Kirkpatrick.  Top overall pence per kilo of 313.5p was paid to Messrs Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton for 580kg and purchased by Steven Wilson, Butcher Shop, Corby Hill, Carlisle.

CAST COWS:  A larger entry 263 cast cows and stock bulls was on offer with a keen ring side of buyers ensuring a great trade again for all classes.

Messrs Fishwick & Son, Thornship Farm sold an 83 month old Limousin x cow for 836kg at 255.5p totalling £2135 bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Ridley, Haltcliffe Farm sold the top priced 10 year old Limousin cow for 811kg at 241.5p totalling £1958 also bought by Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Goldie, Newbie Mains sold the top priced Charolais cow for 843kg at 231.5p totalling £1951 to Michael Helliwell. Messrs Henshall, Sarkshields Farm’s Limousin cows topped at 836kg at 229.5p totalling £1918 to Owain Llyr and 751kg at 226.5p totalling £1701 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Thompson, East Unthank Farm sold a Limousin x cow for 779kg at 237.5p totalling £1850 to Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Pattinson, Kinkry Hill sold two British Blue cows for 766kg at 239.5p totalling £1834 and 628kg at 237.5p totalling £1491 both purchased by Owain Llyr. A plain show of 204 dairy cast cows was on offer however trade would be sharper on the week. Messrs Taylor, East Park Farm sold a 61 month old Holstein x cow for 795kg at 193.5p totalling £1538 to Les Fell. Messrs Holliday, Dobcross Hall sold an 82 month old Dutch Holstein x cow for 831kg at 184.5p totalling £1533 to Pickstocks. Castlesteads Farm sold a 109 month old Holstein x cow for 786kg at 190.5p totalling £1497 to Les Fell. Messrs Haston & Son, Swordwellrigg Farm sold a 73 month old Montbeliarde x cow for 827kg at 180.5p totalling £1492 to Les Fell, a Montbeliarde x 78 month old cow for 715kg at 190.5p totalling £1362 to Messrs Roberts and a 50 month old Holstein x cow for 723kg at 191.5p totalling £1384 to Pickstocks. Messrs McNabney Bros, Barsalloch Farm sold a Limousin stock bull for 820kg at 227.5p totalling £1865 to Steven Helliwell. PRIME SHEEP: A smaller show of hoggs were forward with handy weighted sheep at a premium and rates firmer for this type. An overall average of £123.82 per head shows a rise of over £6 a head on the week. Top price per head and per kilo was claimed by the same vendor, Messrs Little, Hollands, Penton selling to a top of £172 which was purchased by Mr R Skelton with 38kg hoggs from the same home selling to £153 or 402.6ppk.

CAST EWES: Trade continued the national trend with yet another flying sale. Topping today’s sale at £225 was a Texel ewe from Messrs Wills, Bowness Hall with strong ewes selling easily over £180. Mules topped at £170 for one from Messrs Richardson, Whitehead Brow. Suffolks sold to £180 from Messrs Palmer, Greensyke with tups from the same home topping at £170. Swaledales sold to a top of £88 from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House. Many more could be sold with ease on a weekly basis.
